Stanford Washington Betting Predictions – Stanford Faces Added Pressure At Washington

Posted by Blake Fraizer on 9/24/2012 6:35:06 PM

The Stanford Cardinal now have a target on their backs as they go to Seattle this Thursday for a prime-time showdown against the Washington Huskies.

Stanford Cardinal @ Washington Huskies – Thursday, September 27
Betting line: Stanford -7

Why Stanford Will Win

It's likely that mma betting experts know about Stanford's upset of USC. The Cardinal could very well be better than advertised. They have a great chance to win this game, and it's because their elite defense will enjoy a pronounced matchup advantage against Washington's banged-up offensive line.

Stanford's defense was the centerpiece of the Cardinal's win over USC last weekend. Stanford's front four crushed USC's offensive line and gave the Trojans' star quarterback, Matt Barkley, no real ability to do anything on the final few drives of the fourth quarter. Stanford shut out USC in the game's final 41 minutes, a ringing affirmation of the fact that the Cardinal have been able to maintain former coach Jim Harbaugh's identity under the current coaching staff and new boss David Shaw.

Washington has a thin offensive line that has been hounded by injuries in the first few weeks of the season. The Huskies have also been hurt at the running back spot, which means that talented quarterback Keith Price might face predictable passing situations far too frequently. If Washington can't protect Price, its passing game won't amount to much, and Stanford's defensive line can take control of this game. You will not find a better defensive performance in the month of September than the one Stanford delivered against USC. If Stanford plays at a similar level against Washington, the Cardinal should win.

Why Washington Will Win

When college football betting students assess this tilt, they'll contend that while Stanford's defense is superb, its offense is noticeably weak, and this is the portal for Washington to jump through on Thursday night in search of a victory.

What had to jump out at most college football betting experts in Stanford's victory over USC last week – amidst the hugely satisfying moment of triumph for the Cardinal program – was that it came without a particularly distinguished performance from its quarterback. Josh Nunes faced a tall order in having to replace superstar Andrew Luck, and for most of Saturday's game against USC, Nunes was ordinary. He finished the game with 15 completions in 32 attempts, just below a 50-percent success rate. Nunes threw two interceptions, bounced a number of throws, and did not move the Cardinal on a consistent basis.

He made some plays in the clutch, but for the first three quarters, he did not provide his team with any appreciable degree of extra value. He will have to be far better in this game for Stanford to win. Going into Seattle is rarely easy for any Pac-12 team, even though Washington is not playing at its on-campus ballpark, Husky Stadium, this season (due to renovations). Stanford simply can't expect to win 21-14 grinders all season long, and Nunes does not yet seem ready to give his team the boost on offense it will need in Seattle.

Who Will Win

Stanford's offense is likely to struggle and its defense is likely to thrive. This combination of likely developments should create a close game. Stanford won't score a lot, but if the Cardinal limit their turnovers, they should win. However, the sense here is that Nunes will throw two more interceptions, and Washington will convert those mistakes into points. The Huskies will knock off the Cardinal in the final minutes.
