Offense

For legions of experts who offer advice on college football betting, the truth was obvious last season: Casey Pachall grew up as a big-time college quarterback. Shaky for portions of the first half of the season, Pachall found his footing in the second half, leading the Horned Frogs to a 10-win regular season and earning the trust of his teammates. Pachall distributed the ball to his wide receivers, making the kinds of accurate reads that didn't come naturally in the first part of the season. As long as Pachall continues his trajectory and demonstrates even more development as a decision-maker and game manager, the Horned Frogs' offense should be in very good shape. Establishing the run will take some heat off Pachall, but this is an offense that can convert third downs with the pass even when defenses are expecting an aerial. There's enough speed on the edges to put opposing cornerbacks and safeties on their heels. TCU shouldn't suffer on this side of the ball.

Defense

The ranks of betting websites are going to love the overs in TCU games, simply because the Horned Frogs are likely to get immersed in many shootouts. TCU will face a considerable uphill climb in terms of winning its conference after claiming the 2011 Mountain West crown thanks to a one-point win at Boise State. TCU is entering an offense-dominated Big 12 in which most passing attacks operate at a level of proficiency that easily dwarfs anything the Frogs saw in the Mountain West, Boise State excepted. Oklahoma, West Virginia, Kansas State, Oklahoma State – these teams are all equipped with lethally potent offenses, making the weekly prospect of high-end Big 12 tilts far more daunting than the Mountain West, which offered the occasional ambush game but also provided a number of softies on the slate. A young secondary that got smoked last season by Boise State's Kellen Moore and Baylor's Robert Griffin will have to grow up quickly if TCU wants to remain in the Big 12 title chase to the very end of the season.

Grade: C+

Special Teams

Various legal online sports betting analysts know that placekicking has been shaky for TCU the past few years, ever since a few missed field goals were missed in a defining 2008 game at Utah. That loss at Utah cost TCU an unbeaten season, a conference championship, and a spot in a BCS bowl game. The Horned Frogs need to make gains on special teams since their defense is not as formidable as it has been over the past half-decade.

Prediction

The odds for the Horned Frogs' chances of winning the Big 12 are not great, but they're not horrible, either. This team actually has more weapons than Texas or Oklahoma State, and it should be able to finish in the top three of the conference. Beating both Oklahoma and West Virginia, however, will be a challenge. Third in the Big 12 is probably where the Frogs will end up. That's not bad, but it's not the fulfillment of this program's dreams as it moves to a new conference.
