11th-Ranked Oklahoma Set For First Of Back-To-Back Big-12 Rivalry Games

Posted by Blake Frazier on 2/4/2014 5:59:36 AM

The Oklahoma Sooners earned a statement win when they knocked off the then-No. 22 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a 35-21 win last Saturday. A tough schedule left them without much time to celebrate. The Sooners went back to work this week with a tough slate ahead of them as they get set to host the rival TCU Horned Frogs this Saturday – one week ahead of the Red River Rivalry game against the Texas Longhorns. Both tilts are at Norman, but there won’t be much room for error as Oklahoma looks to crack the top-10 and establish itself as a legitimate online sports betting Big 12 favorite over these next two games.

TCU will be the first obstacle in the Sooners’ path, although this team didn’t show much flash in a 20-10 loss to Texas Tech in its Big 12 opener two weeks ago with no Casey Pachall. The Horned Frogs bounced back with a big win over SMU last week, but navigating a tough conference schedule without Pachall will be very difficult.

College Football Betting Preview: TCU

Pachall lasted less than eight full quarters before going down with a season-ending injury, and he may have taken TCU’s Big-12 chances with him. Backup quarterback sophomore Trevone Boykin replaced Pachall under center for the second-consecutive year, but he struggled in the loss to the Red Raiders with just 194 passing yards and two interceptions despite rushing for 101 yards in that loss. Boykin’s lack of poise in the pocket is an issue, and the Horned Frogs will likely continue to rely on their rushing attack first and foremost. Sophomore running back BJ Catalon and senior Waymon James have both averaged over five yards per carry this season, but it will be a lot tougher running the ball against a tough defense without the threat of more big plays in the passing game.

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma

Oklahoma ranks sixth in the nation in points per game allowed, allowing an average of just 12 points while winning each of their first four games by double digits. The Sooners’ defense forced three interceptions in the win over Notre Dame, and will look to stop the run up front and pressure the Horned Frogs in to forcing Boykin to make plays with his arm. Junior quarterback Blake Bell led the way against the Fighting Irish with 232 passing yards and two touchdowns, and he added 59 yards on the ground. The Oklahoma offense has showed a surprisingly strong balance with Bell in the pocket and the senior running back tandem of Brennan Clay and Damien Williams handling the bulk of the carries for a rushing attack that ranks 17th in the nation with an average of 256.8 yards per game.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The Sooners are fortunate to play both TCU and Texas at home these next two weeks, and anything less than back-to-back wins will be a disappointment. The Horned Frogs aren’t nearly as good without Pachall leading the way, and Oklahoma should be able to take advantage in this online betting contest with a tough defense and strong balance on the offensive side of the football.

College Football Betting Pick: Oklahoma Sooners – 10.5
