College Football 2013: Temple Preview

Posted by Blake Frazier on 7/4/2013 8:25:14 PM

When people in the online sports betting legal realm contemplate how the Temple Owls will fare on the gridiron in 2013, they’ll have to face up to the reality that the Owls will be playing in a new conference, the reconstituted American Athletic Conference. Much as a deck of cards is shuffled in any set of poker games that action-seekers like to engage in, the realm of college sports has seen its teams get reshuffled and then dealt to different conferences. “The American” is a mixture of teams from the old Big East and a former version of Conference USA. Temple is not likely to finish in the upper tier of this conference in 2013, but the Owls will be excited to know where they stand in The American’s pecking order.

American football betting gurus who focus more on the Pac-12 and the Southeastern Conference will realize that Temple is starting anew this season. A new coach is being asked to provide fresh leadership for a program that is two years removed from being in the Mid-American Conference and is being forced to compete at a much higher level. Paul Myerberg of USA Today wrote the following on June 15 in his Temple overview:

“Temple went back into its past to nab a replacement for Boston College-bound Steve Addazio, but don't worry: Temple didn't go too far into its past. It shied away from the years prior to 2006, when Al Golden stepped in and reversed the program's fate, and opted for one of Golden's chief lieutenants in ex-offensive coordinator Matt Rhule. It's very easy to make the case that Rhule should have been promoted into the top spot following the 2010 season, when Golden left Temple for Miami (Fla.). Instead, the Owls went with Addazio, who turned in one successful season – nine wins in 2011 – before dropping to just four victories last fall, Temple's first back in the Big East. Well, it's no longer the Big East. That's changed, but Rhule's return spells a move back to Temple's recent glory days, when the offense was pro-style, the defense aggressive and the team worked as one cohesive unit. Those were good times. Rhule will bring 'em back.”

Myerberg’s belief that Temple will rediscover a winning formula does not apply to the short term. This is not just Temple’s problem, but a product of the fact that The American will provide a level of competition that’s much more robust than the MAC. Temple is going to operate at a considerable deficit in terms of speed on the edges. Cincinnati, Central Florida, Southern Methodist, and especially league favorite Louisville are going to expose Temple outside the numbers. Those four teams will be particularly well positioned to make the Owls look slow on both offense and defense. No amount of coaching Rhule can do will change this dynamic – not in the short term. The Owls have to hope that a new conference will create a new level of enthusiasm in and around the program that will translate into much better recruiting. Assembling quality depth will be a need for Temple in 2014 and beyond… because the Owls lack that attribute in 2013.
