Tennessee vs Alabama Odds - Tide to roll over pathetic Vols offense

Posted by Tony Bryant on 10/20/2009 12:02:49 PM
NFL lineThe Tennessee vs Alabama odds matches up two SEC schools who have had very different paths to this point in the season. The real question that everyone wants to know is whether the Vols are capable of pulling the upset. While the Vols have become a sexy up-and-comer in the SEC, online betting fans should recognize that they aren’t ready for a road win of this magnitude.

Tennessee vs Alabama odds: Alabama -15.5

  • WHAT: NCAA Football betting
  • WHEN: Saturday, October 24th – 3:30 PM ET
  • WHERE: Bryant-Denny Stadium – Tuscaloosa, AL
  • PICK: Alabama -15.5

Tennessee vs Alabama odds maker breakdown: What’s On The Line
If a win over Alabama was the Volunteers’ (3-3, 1-2) last win of the season, it would be a huge success in Lane Kiffin’s first year. More likely, though, is Tennessee’s attempts to get into a bowl game. The Vols are coming off their best game of the season and a bye week, and a win here would send tremors through the NCAA football betting landscape.

For Alabama (7-0, 4-0), every game is important. As they continue to keep pace with Florida - and Texas - the Tide have to keep on rolling to stay with the crowd. Their defense is playing outstanding football right now, but their offense - particularly quarterbacks Greg McElroy’s struggles - is a concern.

Betting Edge: Alabama

Tennessee vs Alabama odds maker breakdown: Offense
The Vols offense has been two different offenses this year, which is why everyone is curious to see how they perform against Alabama. In the first five games, quarterback Jonathan Crompton was kept in the pocket and looked like one of the worst passers in the nation. Against Georgia, the Vols rolled him out regularly and that resulted in him producing an outstanding game, even earning SEC Player of the Week honors. The Vols have a good running game and a solid offensive line, so if Crompton is effective, they should have a shot to win. The question is, how effective will he be against a top-notch defense on the road?

Meanwhile, Alabama has to be concerned for their own quarterback, Greg McElroy, who has completed just 46% of his passes in the last two games. Granted, he has faced South Carolina and Ole Miss in those games - not easy defenses to play against - but he needs to wake up because the competition doesn’t get any easier. The good news for Alabama is that running back Mark Ingram is on fire and having a Heisman-type season. Right now, his success is masking some of the offensive struggles.

Betting Edge: Alabama

Tennessee vs Alabama odds maker breakdown: Defense
The Vols defense has been the strength of the team this season, and it ranks in the Top 25 in several categories. Safety Eric Berry is a real stud in this unit but he’s not the only one. Under the tutelage of Monte Kiffin, the Vols defense has really grown up - even with several injuries. The Vols have depth and playmakers, but where this unit struggles is when the offense hangs them out to dry.

For Alabama, there is no better defense in the SEC - or maybe even the nation. With monsters like Tay Cody upfront on the defensive line, to the linebacking corps with guys like Rolando McClain, to playmakers in the secondary like Javier Arenas, this is a stout unit. Last week, the Tide sacked South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia five times and allowed just 64 rushing yards on 24 carries.

Betting Edge: Alabama

Tennessee vs Alabama odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
The Vols do have some key injuries on defense from earlier in the season, but they have dipped into their depth and are have recovered well. The backups are playing at a high level.

Alabama is without linebacker Dont’a Hightower, who is out for the season, but the defense has been fine without him, believe it or not. Keep an eye on defensive back Javier Arenas who missed the South Carolina game because of bruised ribs.

Betting Edge: Even

Tennessee vs Alabama State betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
The sportsbook odds makers have Alabama as a big favorite, and the reason for that is because Tennessee isn’t ready to win a game like this. Alabama will keep Crompton in the pocket and he’ll make some mistakes. Alabama’s offense will struggle in the first half but the Vols won’t score enough points to hang around.
