Tennessee LSU Betting – Can The Tigers Get Healthy Against The Diminished Volunteers?

In 2001 and 2007, LSU and Tennessee played for the SEC Betting championship. This season, the two schools meet in a game that possesses comparatively little significance.

Why To Bet On Tennessee

The Volunteers are only 2-2, but one shouldn’t read too much into their close-shave win over Alabama-Birmingham this past weekend. Tennessee had just come off a two-week stretch against the Oregon Ducks and the Florida Gators, two of the better teams in the United States. The Vols expended a lot of emotional and psychological energy in those two games, and as smart students of college football know, a team is not going to play each and every game with the exact same level of intensity or concentration. A bunch of 19-year-old males will not be consistent for very long. Tennessee was an emotionally drained team when it took the field against UAB on Sept. 25 in Knoxville. The Vols were just trying to do enough to get by, and that’s exactly what they did. Now that Tennessee has gotten past that 32-29 double-overtime hurdle, the Vols – buoyed with confidence following their victory under difficult circumstances – should play a lot better against LSU. Coach Derek Dooley has a lot of things he can teach to his team on game film this week, and that will make the Volunteers a far more focused team on the practice field. That progression should then carry the Vols into Saturday’s game and make them a more cohesive unit on both sides of the ball.

In addition to the notion that Tennessee will “gear up” for this game, one should also consider how poor the LSU offense has been in 2010. The Tigers needed a punt return and a fumble recovery at the West Virginia Mountaineers 7 to score their only two touchdowns last week in a 20-14 win over the Mountaineers. LSU also scored just two touchdowns the week before against Mississippi State Bulldogs despite getting five interceptions on defense. LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson – in four games – has averaged 11 completions in 20 attempts for 105 yards, 0.5 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He’s played poorly, despite the fact that the Tigers are 4-0. Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox has been one of the better defensive minds in America over the past several years dating to his recent stint at Boise State Broncos. The Vols will have the game plan needed to limit LSU’s offense.

Why To Bet On LSU

The Tigers have Patrick Peterson, and no one else does. Peterson has returned multiple kicks for touchdowns this season while blocking a field goal and collecting a few interceptions as well. If LSU can simply avoid mistakes on offense, Peterson can do the job on both defense and special teams for the Bayou Bengals. Peterson is a game-breaking player who is worth at least three or four points by himself, if not more.

The other reason LSU could blow the lid off Tiger Stadium in this home game is that Tennessee’s offense is decidedly poor. The Vols mustered only 15 points a game in that Oregon-Florida stretch, with quarterback Matt Simms throwing crippling interceptions deep in enemy territory and failing to protect the ball. If LSU’s defense – the strength of the team – gets two more picks from Simms, the Tigers could run away with the proceedings.

How The Game Will Play Out

The Tigers will certainly not lose this game straight up – Tennessee has no offensive weapons whatsoever and will not be able to threaten LSU. However, LSU’s offense is still bad, and with no clear solution in sight at the quarterback position, a two-touchdown spread is asking an awful lot of the Tigers. Tennessee won’t win, but its defense is good enough to cover the number… even on the road.
