Tennessee South Carolina Betting Tips – Gamecocks Look To Bounce Back

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/22/2012 6:56:59 PM

The South Carolina Gamecocks’ fall from the top-10 hasn’t been pretty. After back-to-back losses to No. 6 LSU and No. 2 Florida, the Gamecocks will be looking to reset when they host the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday. Penalties and inconsistencies troubled the South Carolina offense en route to just 11 points last week against a tough Gators’ defense, but it should become a little easier the rest of the way. The Gamecocks play three-straight home games against unranked opponents, and if they can win all three they could get a shot at redemption at Clemson for their regular season finale.

The Volunteers haven’t been any better than South Carolina over these past three weeks, following up a close loss to Georgia with a pair of double-digit losses against Mississippi State and Alabama. Several sports betting experts had the upset alert up for Tennessee’s game against the top-ranked Tide last weekend, but that was far from the case in their biggest loss so far this season, 44-13 the final.

The top-ranked passing game in the nation was no match for Alabama’s stout defense, and it sure didn’t help that the Volunteers’ defense gave up 539 yards on the ground. Junior quarter Tyler Bray threw for just 184 yards and no touchdowns, but did toss a couple of interceptions, including one late in the third quarter that pretty much sealed the loss. While the offense struggled, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway with Sal Sunseri’s defense coming up way short once again. The Tennessee defense was supposed to take a significant step forward this season, but has ended up struggling with even worse numbers than it allowed a year ago.

The Gamecocks will look to take advantage of the Volunteers’ defense with a much better offensive effort this week, after being held to just 191 total yards in the loss to Florida last week. Junior quarterback Connor Shaw will get another chance after being benched in favor of sophomore Dylan Thompson last week, even though he did have the better numbers of the two last week and didn’t turn the ball over. The key to this game will be to get running back Marcus Lattimore and the ground game going after struggling against two tough run defenses in LSU and Florida the past two weeks. Lattimore should have no problem finding holes in the Tennessee defense, and that will help open space for Shaw to go over the top.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

For as good as the Volunteeers’ pass offense can be when it’s on, it has been far too inconsistent over the past three weeks, all of which were Tennessee losses. The Gamecocks enter this game looking to salvage what is left of what could still be a top-10 season, but there is little room for any online sportsbook errors the rest of the way.
