Tips For Betting On Auburn Mississippi State – Auburn, Mississippi State Lock Horns In SEC West Tilt

The Auburn Tigers are trying to make that upward push in the Southeastern Conference's loaded West Division. They'll try to start conference play the right way when tackling Mississippi State.

Why Auburn Will Win

No bet on sports should be rooted in hype. It should be based in facts and a calm, level-headed assessment of a given situation. Such clarity should lead a rational person to conclude that Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen is not as impressive as previously thought. It wasn't very long ago that Mullen, the offensive coordinator on Florida's two championship teams who had coached No. 1 NFL Draft pick Alex Smith when at Utah (2004), was one of the most sought-after coaches in college football.

When his boss, Urban Meyer, stepped down at Florida in 2010, Mullen was one of the people viewed as a possible replacement. Florida never did offer Mullen the job, but for a week in December of 2010, Mullen was seen as a rising star in the college football community. Plenty of pundits felt Mullen would leave Mississippi State to accept a plum coaching job. Now, life is very different.

In a 2011 season that was going to reshape the way Mullen was perceived as a national figure, Mississippi State did not perform all that well. Mullen, in his third season on the job, could not connect with his two erratic quarterbacks, Tyler Russell and Chris Relf. Mississippi State gained its wins from bottom-tier SEC teams Kentucky and Ole Miss, but the Bulldogs' offense did next to nothing in every other SEC game save for a 41-34 loss at Auburn in week two. In five of its six SEC losses (excepting the one at Auburn), Mississippi State averaged 10.4 points per game. Mullen pressed many buttons for his offense, but nothing worked. The team finished 2-6 in the SEC, making a bowl game on the strength of easy non-conference games featuring Tennessee-Martin, Memphis, and UAB.

Auburn has a limited offense of its own. It shouldn't matter. Mississippi State is groping for solutions that don't seem to exist.

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Even mma betting experts with little in-depth knowledge of college football know that Auburn's 2011 season was worse than its 2010 national championship campaign. The Tigers no longer enjoyed the athleticism and natural talent of Cameron Newton, who went to the NFL. Meanwhile, Auburn's quarterback situation became a mess.

Barrett Trotter was the starter at the beginning of the season, but by the middle of October, he was not seen as the answer to the Tigers' problems under center. Kiehl Frazier gained a significant amount of reps, but he didn't light up the scoreboard, either. Clint Moseley gained a look from head coach Gene Chizik, but he didn’t come anywhere close to making a favorable impression. Frazier is the starting quarterback this year, but that hardly inspires confidence in the AU locker room. This offense is adrift, and that's why Mississippi State can win a 13-10 kind of game as long as it minimizes turnovers and wins the battle for field position.

Who Will Win

Don't expect a lot of offense in this game, even though last year's meeting was a 41-34 shootout. The two offenses are worse this season, and while that will keep the game close, Auburn has a little more power between the tackles with its running game. The Tigers are not a great team, but they find ways to win games such as this one.
