Tips For Betting On USC Washington – USC Needs To Withstand A Tough Test At Washington

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/11/2012 6:44:29 PM

The Washington Huskies have already ambushed one Pac-12 foe, Stanford, at home in Seattle. They'll try to spring another upset when they host the shaky but talented USC Trojans.

USC Trojans @ Washington Huskies – Saturday, October 13
Betting line: USC -12

Why USC Will Win

It's likely that mma betting experts who follow college football on the side are aware of the talent disparity between these teams.  If you looked at this matchup before the season began, you probably would have said that the Trojans figured to win because of their offense, led by senior quarterback Matt Barkley and receivers Marqise Lee and Robert Woods. However, as kickoff time approaches in Seattle, it's actually the Trojans' defense which stands as the best reason to pick USC.

Washington's offense is simply not what it was in 2011, when the Huskies threatened in the Pac-12 because of first-rate playmaking ability from quarterback Keith Price and running back Chris Polk. This season, Polk is in the NFL, and Price has struggled due to the lack of consistent pass protection from his offensive line. Washington's receivers have also been shaky, limiting the extent of what the Huskies can achieve when they have the ball. This must make USC's defense very confident heading into Saturday's clash.

USC's defense has been the backbone for coach Lane Kiffin this season. USC allowed only 21 points to Stanford, only nine to California, and then only 21 to Utah on a night when the Utes scored one defensive touchdown and created another turnover that led to a drive start inside USC's red zone. Essentially, then, USC's defense allowed only one touchdown to Utah, only one score that was based on what could be called a genuine scoring drive. The matchup between USC's defense and Washington's offense works in the Trojans' favor. As long as their offense avoids turnovers, the Men of Troy should win on the road in Seattle.

Why Washington Will Win

When college football betting students assess this tilt, they'll contend that while USC's defense is superb, its offense is noticeably weak, and this gives Washington its big chance. USC has just not performed up to par on offense this season. The Trojans are failing to produce with the regularity every college football pundit expected from them. There were some questions about the depth of the offensive line, one that has indeed been beset by injuries, but the Trojans' skill-position talent on the edges is so overwhelming that most experts thought the offensive line wouldn't matter all that much. It's obvious that the offensive line has to do its job; the instructive point is that few analysts felt the line would completely collapse. Against Stanford, it certainly did, and against Utah, it was horrible in the first quarter before it settled down over the final three quarters.

Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian made one of the best hires of the offseason when he tabbed Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox to take the same position in Seattle. Wilcox developed Boise State into a national power by serving as the Broncos' defensive coordinator during their ascendancy. He then turned in one good year at Tennessee before Washington called. Wilcox has taken a UW defense that got embarrassed in last December's Alamo Bowl (against Baylor) and turned it into a very respectable unit. Washington did not allow an offensive touchdown to Stanford in a 17-13 win on Sept. 27. This defense can certainly contain USC's offense; a steady pass rush could cause turnovers and give the Huskies' struggling offense the favorable drive starts it will need in order to score points.

Who Will Win

Washington will cover the number because its defense should be able to keep the game close. However, the Huskies don't have the firepower needed to win outright. USC is still the money-line choice.
