2015 College Football Betting – USC-Arizona State Preview

Posted by Blake Frazier on 9/26/2015 5:10:12 AM

The college football season is now in its fourth week, but for a lot of teams, the season is starting over in one specific way. Conference games are beginning, and so there’s a need to get off to a good start, thereby avoiding an early deficit in the chase for a championship.

USC Trojans @ Arizona State Sun Devils – Saturday, September 26

Betting Line: USC -5.5

Why USC Will Win

This is a game the Trojans should win, and it’s a game they have to win as well. Most Pac-12 teams did not play conference games last week, but USC did, and so the Trojans’ loss to Stanford immediately put them behind the eight-ball in the race for the Pac-12 South title. USC has to bounce back in this one. The Trojans got a very good performance from Cody Kessler against Stanford. He was efficient and made very good decisions. The Trojans’ backs and receivers made a lot of big plays. The team scored 31 points, which should be more than enough to win most ballgames. It was just that the defense really struggled against the Cardinal. USC has the offensive side of the game pretty much nailed down. It’s only the defense which has to improve. More specifically, the defense doesn’t have to improve by leaps and bounds, either. It just has to take a few steps forward and make slight to moderate gains. As long as this happens, USC should be in a very good position to win.

Realize that Arizona State’s offense has yet to play a complete game this season. The Sun Devils have struggled to play well in each of the three first halves they’ve played this season. Perhaps the only quarter in which they scored and moved the ball consistently was the third quarter of last Friday’s game against New Mexico. Other than that, the Sun Devils have not found any kind of rhythm on offense in the young season. They might get better, but progress is elusive and could still be hard to find in this game against the Trojans.

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils have struggled on offense, but they’ve been very good on defense, forcing multiple turnovers from Texas A&M in the season opener and keeping the team in the game until the fourth quarter. The defense has been holding the team together while the offense tries to find itself. If the offense can come alive in this game, Arizona State should have a very good chance to win. Since USC’s defense gave up 41 points to Stanford and looked as awful as that score would suggest (it was actually worse, since Stanford also controlled the ball while scoring, thereby keeping USC’s potent offense off the field), Arizona State’s offense might be facing the perfect opponent in this game. The Sun Devils have a chance to go right at a young and inexperienced USC defensive line and make great strides on offense. Playing at home, the Sun Devils have a lot to like about this game.

Who Will Win

The struggles of Arizona State’s offense are too consistent to recommend that the Sun Devils will win outright, but USC’s defense is too weak to enable the Trojans to win comfortably. USC will win by a field goal.
