The USC Trojans and Stanford Cardinal both lost last weekend, making their week-six game a must-win in the Pac-10 Conference.

NCAA football betting: USC Trojans @ Stanford Cardinal

Online Betting Odds: Stanford -9.5

Why To Bet On USC

The Trojans will remember last year, when Stanford came into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and drubbed them by a 55-21 score. Stanford whacked USC 27-0 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 34-point victory. The loss effectively ended USC’s six-year hold on the Pac-10 and marked the first November loss in Pete Carroll’s career as the coach at USC. The blowout also represented the first in a series of movements that led Carroll to explore an exit from Los Angeles and eventually land with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. That moment cut very deep for the Trojans, who are also smarting after blowing a late lead against the Washington Huskies this past Saturday. It’s hard to find another game this season (other than the rivalry contests against Notre Dame Fighting Irish and UCLA Bruins) that will mean more to USC than this one. The Trojans will devote a maximum of emotion and passion to Stanford, whose coach – Jim Harbaugh – tried to rub the blowout in Carroll’s face by going for two when leading 48-21 in that game. College football is a game of emotion, and USC will definitely be full of adrenaline as it makes the short journey north to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Why To Bet On Stanford

Yes, the Cardinal got clocked last week in a conference clash, but a lot of teams are going to lose by a double-digit margin to the Oregon Ducks. Stanford looked awesome in building an early 21-3 lead, but the Ducks roared back to score 49 points in the final three quarters en route to a 52-31 win over Stanford. The Cardinal just have to tip their cap to the Ducks and move on with their season. If Oregon stumbles twice, Stanford can still win the Pac-10 title.

Stanford should be a trusted betting choice in this game because, well, the Cardinal are still much better than USC following last year’s romp in L.A. USC has no business losing at home to Washington, a mediocre team that lost to a really bad BYU ballclub. The Trojans are wildly inconsistent in 2010, having allowed nearly 600 total yards to Hawaii and then scoring only 17 points against lowly Virginia Cavaliers. USC’s sanctions suffered at the hands of the NCAA have appreciably hamstrung the program; the Trojans lack the depth any elite college football team needs in order to be successful.

Stanford, meanwhile, is the perfect team to expose an opponent’s lack of depth. The Cardinal play a punishing and physical style that wears down opponents in the third and fourth quarters. The play-action passing of quarterback Andrew Luck works really well when set up by Stanford’s power running game between the tackles. USC’s thin defensive front is going to get its stiffest test of the season on Saturday evening in Palo Alto.

How The Game Will Play Out

USC will hang around for a half on sheer emotion, but Stanford will dominate and pull away in the second half. Last year’s game will be duplicated on the Farm in Stanford.
