USC Trojans Betting – 2011 USC Trojans College Football Preview

USC’s online betting odds to win the BCS title or Pac-12 crown aren’t on the books, and they won’t be because the Trojans are still being punished for their violations dating back to the Pete Carroll/Reggie Bush era, but that hasn’t stopped coach Lane Kiffin (who had his own violations at Tennessee) from trying to keep the program’s head above water. Look for the Trojans to rack up another 8-9 victories in 2011.

Six starters are back on the offensive side of the ball, and the ringleader is quarterback Matt Barkley, who many remembered as a fresh-faced rookie two years ago. Now, Barkley is an experienced junior who is ready to take the next step in his development, and this is his team. He’ll have running back Marc Tyler back, and he is ready for the spotlight after splitting carries with the departed Allen Bradford. Receiver Robert Woods looks ready to break out as well. However, there are questions to be answered up front as Tyron Smith has to be replaced, as does Kristofer O’Dowd, and there were some injuries in the spring. The Trojans may have to throw a couple of freshmen up front, which could affect their NCAA football betting props for the upcoming season. Also, Woods is the most experienced receiver in Los Angeles, and he is only a sophomore. USC’s offense is going to go only as far as Barkley’s supporting cast will, because he will be up to the challenge.

Eight starters return to a defense that was downright brutal in 2010, as the Trojans were 84th in total defense and an abysmal 109th in the nation against the pass. However, they had to learn a new system under coordinator Monte Kiffin, and even though Ed Orgeron is officially listed as the defensive coordinator, Kiffin surely has his hands in the mix with his vast NFL experience. Cornerback Nickell Robey and safety T.J. McDonald are the lynchpins of a secondary that should definitely be improved, and up front, Jurrell Casey leads a group of players who were very young last season. All three linebackers were injured during the spring, so that is something that the Kiffins have to worry about because they don’t have very much depth, on either side of the ball to be honest. But USC isn’t going to go very far unless the pass defense improves, so look for that to be the focus of 2011.

Even though NCAA football betting players may not find the Trojans’ futures in their sports betting book, they will find their lines on a weekly basis, and they’ll also find USC on television a lot, six times to be exact. The Trojans begin with three straight home games against Minnesota, Pac-12 newcomers Utah and Syracuse, before they head out to Arizona State. USC comes back home to face Arizona, and then they take on back-to-back rivals on the road at California and Notre Dame. The Trojans will spend Halloween weekend preparing for one of their two massive games this season as they welcome defending conference champion Stanford to Los Angeles, before heading to Colorado, a home game against Washington and then a visit to Oregon, who were the BCS runners-up last season. Finally, the Trojans wrap up their season with their annual meeting with UCLA, this year to be held at the Coliseum. USC has won nine of the last 10 against the Bruins, and at home, they’ll definitely be the NCAA football betting favorite.

USC should have some props out on their win totals ahead of the season, and they’re still appealing their inability to go to the postseason, so keep an eye on that story because if they’re successful (and that’s not likely, given how heavy-handed the NCAA has been in recent years), the Trojans will definitely be eligible for a bowl. Nine wins isn’t out of the realm of possibility for USC and if the appeal is lifted, the optimism flowing through the locker room will be enough for one more win. However, the Trojans have to be able to keep Barkley upright with their shaky line, another receiver has to step up in order to help Woods, and the defense has to continue to improve under Kiffin, and if everyone comes back healthy from this spring’s adventures, USC is going to be, at the very least, entertaining to watch for sports betting players.
