Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Predictions – Logan Thomas Is The Main Man For The Hokies

For any primer on the ACC portion of NCAA football betting, the Virginia Tech Hokies are at the top of the list of conference title contenders, primarily because of their main man under center. Virginia Tech didn't find a steady offensive rhythm for a prolonged period of time last season. New quarterback Logan Thomas labored in his first season as the Hokies' starter. The replacement for Tyrod Taylor, the dynamic field general who led the team to an ACC title in 2010, struggled with his reads and progressions. He never developed an unshakable rapport with his receivers. In short, despite the presence of elite running back David Wilson in Tech's backfield, Thomas couldn't parlay that advantage into a steady stream of downfield pass plays. Virginia Tech's offense failed to hit its stride for most of the season, approaching its potential only four times – against Miami, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, and Virginia. In the team's other seven games from the 2011 season, the Hokies wobbled and wavered, uncertain of what to do on the field.

No team exploited Thomas's and Tech's weaknesses more than Clemson. The Tigers crushed the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va., by a 23-3 count on Oct. 1. After Tech fought its way back to the ACC Championship Game by defending its Coastal Division crown, Clemson reared back and punched out the Hokies yet again, taking a 38-10 decision. How Thomas responds to those humiliations will determine much of the course of Virginia Tech's season.

Grade: B+

The best bet to make on a Virginia Tech defense is that it will learn from past mistakes.  Virginia Tech never did adjust to Clemson's speed on both sides of the ball last season, so if the Hokies want to reclaim the ACC, they're going to have to adjust to what Clemson does, which is to spread the field and get fast receivers into space. The speed of the Hokies' secondary was suspect last season. Virginia Tech has to get faster in the defensive backfield, but the fact that the Hokies' defense brings almost everybody back should enable this team to improve. Moreover, the fact that Virginia Tech has one of the best defensive coordinators in the business, Bud Foster, should produce the kinds of performances that will enable the Hokies to bounce back when they play Clemson.

Grade: A-

Various online sports books will tell you that Virginia Tech's penchant for punt blocking still exists. The field goal kicking game is solid. However, Virginia Tech's punting has been suspect in recent years. The Hokies have not been as dominant in this phase of football as they used to be.

Grade: B

The Hokies butter their bread on defense, and since they're going to be supremely experienced on the defensive side of the ball this year, they'll be in position to fix their foremost deficiencies. Toward the end of last season, Thomas began to figure out the quarterback position, but in 2012, he needs to show that he can be a reliable trigger man for the Hokies every single week.

Beating Georgia Tech is the Hokies' other priority in 2012. The Hokies know that if they defeat the Yellow Jackets, they'll be a near lock to represent the Coastal Division in the ACC title tilt. If Thomas displays the maturity head coach Frank Beamer expects from him this season, the Hokies can make a BCS bowl, just as they did last year. This is the team to beat in the ACC, with Clemson having a say in the matter.
