Previewing High-Profile Week 5 College Football Match-ups

Posted by Blake Frazier on 9/25/2014 10:07:33 PM

Many of the top college football programs begin conference play this coming weekend, which means it's time for fans to prepare for upsets as we begin to truly realize which teams are for real, and which ones have skated by on a cupcake schedule. The only game between Top 25 teams occurred Thursday evening, but Saturday afternoon is jam-packed with action as nearly every ranked team will take the field.

Florida State Seminoles @ NC State Wolfpack

Odds: Florida State -19

The Florida State Seminoles barely survived the Clemson Tigers last week without Jameis Winston, and the road doesn't get much easier as they take on the undefeated NC State Wolfpack. NC State has yet to face a true Division 1 opponent this season, and the Seminoles should have no problem giving them their first loss of the season. Covering the spread is an entire different animal, however, and considering Winston missed a full game last week – despite initially dressing in pads and full uniform – he'll take the field with a chip on his shoulder and take no mercy on a Wolfpack squad that has had one of the easiest schedules to date.

Pick: Florida State

Arkansas Razorbacks @ Texas A&M Aggies

Odds: Texas A&M -10

Even with Johnny Manziel holding the clipboard on Sunday's, the Texas A&M Aggies continue to have one of the most exiting and effective offenses in the country as Sophomore quarterback Kenny Hill has thrown for nearly 1,400 yards and 13 touchdowns with a completion percentage close to 70. The Arkansas Razorbacks will be Hill's first true test, and considering they've failed to blowout team's in the same fashion the Aggies have this is a game I expect the home team to win.

Pick: Texas A&M

Missouri Tigers @ South Carolina Gamecocks

Odds: South Carolina -6

This SEC match-up could be the game of the week as the Missouri Tigers were ranked in the Top 25 prior to their loss last weekend to the Indiana Hoosiers. Maty Mauk is the star quarterback for the Tigers, and his 15 touchdowns to date are the second most in the nation among quarterbacks, which is no surprise as the Tigers average 38 points and 244 passing yards per game. The South Carolina Gamecocks were able to barely pull-off a victory against the Vanderbilt Commodores last weekend, and their offensive success will hinge on the shoulders of running back Mike Davis, who is averaging just 4.6 yards per carry this season.

Pick: Missouri

Oregon State Beavers @ USC Trojans

Odds: USC -10

The USC Trojans have been a pleasant surprise this season as the Steve Sarkisian-led squad is 2-1 and ranked #18 in the country. Their Week 5 game will be one of their toughest yet as the Oregon State Beavers are led by senior quarterback Sean Mannion. Mannion has thrown for over 11,000 yards in his career and should have no problem eclipsing the 300-yard mark against the Trojans. This puts the pressure on the Trojan offense, which simply isn't powerful enough to outscore one of the best offenses in the country by 10 points.

Pick: Oregon State
