SEC Still Wide Open Heading In To Week Seven Highlighted By Two Crucial Showdowns

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/8/2014 10:20:42 PM

The SEC received a major shake up in week six when Alabama had its undefeated season ended by Ole Miss and Texas A&M had its perfect record spoiled by Mississippi State. The Rebels and Bulldogs are actually both ranked third in the nation heading in to week seven of the college football season but both of them face tough tests highlighted by the game of the week in Mississippi State hosting No. 2 Auburn.

#2 Auburn Tigers (-2.5) @ #3 Mississippi State Bulldogs

Saturday, 3:30 PM ET

Dual-threat quarterback Dak Prescott is the real deal and his emergence has the Bulldogs among the legitimate SEC contenders thanks to 92.1 QBR that is the best in the country since September 13th. Mississippi State has already beaten LSU and Texas A&M but as good as they have been this will be their toughest test yet against another outstanding dual-threat quarterback in Nick Marshall and a team that knows how to get the job done in pressure situations. One other aspect that can’t be overlooked is Auburn’s defense which ranks in the SEC top-three in scoring, total, and run defense categories. The Tigers will do their best to get Prescott off his game and as long as Marshall and the offense continues to perform at a high level the margin for error will be very slim. The Bulldogs have the home advantage but we will take the experience with Marshall and Auburn.

Pick: Auburn Tigers -2.5

#7 Alabama Crimson Tide (-10.5) @ Arkansas Razorbacks

Saturday, 6:00 PM ET

The last time Alabama had a perfect season ended it followed that loss up with another so there has to be a sense of urgency for Nick Saban and his staff this week. The Tide offense simply has to be better after their last two drives ended with a fumble and an interception in the loss to Ole Miss and it won’t be easy on the road against an Arkansas team that will try to pound the football relentlessly. The Razorbacks are 0-2 in the SEC but they nearly upset Texas A&M in an overtime loss two weeks ago and the bye week gave them an extra seven days to prepare. Alabama should win this game but is in a tough spot and will have a difficult time trying to cover on the road.

Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide -10.5

#3 Ole Miss Rebels @ #14 Texas A&M Aggies (-2)

Saturday, 9:00 PM ET

Defense has been key for an Ole Miss team that has allowed an SEC-best 10.2 points per game this season. The Rebels have done a lot of things right and their secondary has looked excellent when it comes to coverage and interceptions while Bo Wallace and the offense are coming off their best game last week against the Tide. Turnovers and missed opportunities led to the first loss of the season for Texas A&M but they are back home and have an excellent job to redeem themselves in what could be a trap game for Ole Miss having to travel after such a big victory. The Aggies won’t win if Kenny Hill turns the ball over but if he can settle down at home and make the plays the home fans have become used to seeing from him then they should be able to get back on track with a win and cover a slim spread at home.

Pick: Texas A&M Aggies -2
