NCAA Football Week 9 Primetime Picks

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/23/2014 10:52:21 PM

With the end of the NCAA football regular season approaching each game is becoming more and more important. The new playoff system allows for some room for error, but teams like the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers have already lost a game this year and will need to come out firing this weekend to keep their hopes for a National Championship alive.

Oregon Ducks @ California Golden Bears

Friday October 24, 2014 – 10 PM ET

Odds: Oregon -18

The Oregon Ducks have rebounded nicely since their upset loss to the Arizona Wildcats as they're now 6-1 with a two-game winning streak on the line. The California Golden Bears shouldn't threaten their near perfect record, but they did compete with the UCLA Bruins last Saturday and have an offense that averages 41 points per game, 10th most in the country. Oregon's defense should be able to give them trouble throughout the night, but 18 points is a rather large spread to cover against an offensive-minded squad, making the California Golden Bears my sports betting pick.

Pick: California

Ole Miss Rebels @ LSU Tigers

Saturday October 25, 2014 – 7:15 PM ET

Odds: Ole Miss -3.5

The Ole Miss Rebels have secured themselves as a top five team and will now take on the under performing LSU Tigers. LSU is coming off a convincing win over the Kentucky Wildcats, but they struggled to beat a 3-3 Florida Gators squad just two weeks ago which is somewhat concerning given their lack of recent success. LSU should have no problem running the ball as they average 220 yards on the ground per game, but the Ole Miss defense ranks first in the country in points allowed, which is 25 less than their offense averages per contest.

Pick: Ole Miss

Alabama Crimson Tide @ Tennessee Volunteers

Saturday October 25, 2014 – 7:30 PM ET

Odds: Alabama -17

The Alabama Crimson Tide may not be ranked as the number one team in the country, but they played like it last week when they beat the Texas A&M Aggies 59-0. The Crimson Tide defense shutout one of the more prolific offenses in the country, an impressive feat even though the opposing quarterback – Kenny Hill – is just a sophomore who was starting his eighth career game. The Alabama offense was dominant as well as the running attack accumulated nearly 300 yards on the ground with a 6.6 yards per carry average. Alabama will win this game easy, and the 17-point spread should be a non-factor if they play up to their potential.

Pick: Alabama

Michigan Wolverines @ Michigan State Spartans

Saturday October 25, 2014 – 3:30 PM ET

Odds: Michigan State -17

The Michigan State Spartans may be one of the most underrated teams in the country as their only loss came at the hands of Oregon, and they've gone 3-0 in the Big Ten with minimal resistance. Their schedule doesn't match-up to that of some of the premier SEC teams, but their offense ranks third in the country in scoring and their ground attack, which is rarely talked about, is averaging 260 yards of offense per game. Quarterback Connor Cook is having a good but not spectacular season, and the Spartans as a whole will simply be too much for the Michigan Wolverines, a squad that's 3-4 and on a sharp downturn.

Pick: Michigan State
