Wisconsin Nebraska Betting Tips – Nebraska Ready For Big Ten Showdown Versus Wisconsin

Posted by Blake Frazier on 9/26/2012 6:57:05 PM

The Nebraska Cornhuskers didn’t fare well in their first Big 10 game against the Wisconsin Badgers. Nebraska was unbeaten and ranked eighth in the country when All-American running back Montee Ball ran all over them for 151 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-17 loss to then-No. 7 Wisconsin. The Cornhuskers feel much more prepared this time around as they look to avenge that sports betting loss in front of a packed house at Memorial Stadium, and could have a significant edge if Ball isn’t able to play.

Ball sat out the second half of the Badgers’ 37-26 win over UTEP last week after he took a shot to the head in that game, and while Wisconsin head coach Brett Bielema is confident that he will be ready to go Saturday, it is the second head injury the Heisman trophy finalist has suffered in less than two months.

College Football Betting Preview: Wisconsin

Last year’s rushing leader with an NCAA-best 1,923 yards a year ago, Ball sustained a concussion when he was attacked near campus in August, and gave up his first career fumble in last week’s game. Even if he does go there will be some concern about how healthy he is, and that could lead Beilema to lean on Melvin Gordon and James White a little more the way he had to when Ball went down. Gordon impressed with 112 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries, while White had 65 yards and two scores on 15 attempts. Quarterback Joel Stave replaced Danny O’Brien in the second half of Wisconsin’s 16-14 win over Utah State and his looked good ever since, and will look to keep the ball moving against a Huskers’ defense that allowed 653 total yards to UCLA in their only loss.

With the defense a concern, Nebraska will lean even more on junior quarterback Taylor Martinez, who will look to put an awful performance against the Badgers last season behind him. Martinez threw three interceptions in a six-minute span that allowed Wisconsin to climb out of an early deficit in last year’s game, but has been excellent leading the Huskers to a Big 10-best 48.5 points per game and 541.8 points per game this season. Sophomore running back Ameer Abdullah has helped lighten the load a little bit with 416 rushing yards and five touchdowns through four games, and will need another strong performance to balance the offense. The Nebraska defense has bounced back from the UCLA debacle by allowing a combined 496 yards in wins over Arkansas State and Idaho State, and unless Stave can establish the passing game the Huskers will be able to crowd the line.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

While the Huskers should be able to bring a better effort at home in their second chance in the Big Ten against Wisconsin, there are too many question marks on the defensive side of the ball to risk the 11.5-point online betting spread. Even if Ball isn’t at full strength the Badgers have shown they can run the ball with Gordon and White, so they should be able to cover the number in a crucial Big Ten game for both teams.
