49ers Falcons Betting Tips – Atlanta Falls Short of Super Bowl Dream
San Francisco 49ers @ Atlanta Falcons – Sunday January 20, 2013 3:00PM
The NFL betting experts are going to be very careful when choosing the winner of this season’s NFC Championship game. The Packers were considered by many to be the favorite in the divisional game that Green Bay played in San Francisco, but the 49ers proved to be way too much for Green Bay to handle. The Falcons were expected to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round, but the Seahawks were only seconds away from upsetting the Falcons in Atlanta’s own dome. The one advantage the Falcons retain is its dome. But that may not be as much of an advantage as people would like to think.
The betting sites want to pick the Atlanta Falcons in this game for several reasons. But a closer examination of this matchup is in order before making any picks. The San Francisco 49ers offer an element that few teams have been able to compensate for in the past few weeks, and that is quarterback Colin Kaepernick. There will probably come a time next season when the league’s best defensive coordinators will figure out how to slow down Kaepernick just as they have Michael Vick and Cam Newton. But, for now, Kaepernick is giving headaches to every defensive coordinator and player he faces.
Why the Falcons Will Win
The online sports book experts know that the Atlanta Falcons has one of the best offensive lines in all of football. The way that Atlanta will attack this game is by maintaining a significant edge in time of possession, which leaves Kaepernick on the bench. Quarterback Matt Ryan and the Atlanta offense will be working towards grinding out yards on the ground and keeping the San Francisco offense on the sidelines for as long as possible.
Why the 49ers Will Win
Everyone keeps waiting for Colin Kaepernick to make that one big playoff mistakes so that they can dismiss it as “something young quarterbacks do to lose playoff games.” But Kaepernick learns quickly from his mistakes and he rarely repeats them. The Atlanta defense had all kinds of problems containing Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson in the divisional round, and Wilson is much smaller than Kaepernick. On more than one occasion, Kaepernick’s size and strength helped him to get out of problems with the Green Bay defense in the divisional round. The Falcons will be unable to contain Kaepernick and that will be the difference in this game.
The Bottom Line
The Atlanta Falcons did not have an easy time with the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers pose challenges to the Falcons that were very similar to the problems Atlanta had with Seattle. The big difference is that the 49ers are much bigger and much faster than Seattle. This could be a lopsided game, especially if Kaepernick gets comfortable. This will be decided by more than a field goal.
Pick: San Francisco 49ers
