NFL Betting: Buccaneers Try To Prevent Their Season From Slipping Away
The angle on the game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots which seems particularly salient is that the Buccaneers find a way to play close games… and lose.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New England Patriots – Sunday, September 22
Betting line: Patriots – 9
Why Tampa Bay Will Win
This is an interesting aspect of Sunday’s game in Foxborough, Mass.: Sport betting lines have installed New England as a two-possession or two-score favorite. Yet, New England has failed to cover a two-score number twice in two outings this season. The Patriots stumbled past the Buffalo Bills (a not-very-good team) in week one, and they inched past the New York Jets in week two on a night when their offense was actually worse than it was in week one against Buffalo. You can appreciate why New England is not convincing a lot of outside observers to this point in the season. The Patriots, had they played two teams with better quality than the Bills and Jets, would very likely be 1-1 instead of 2-0, and with a really tough schedule, coach Bill Belichick’s team would be 0-2.
This is an intriguing online sports betting situation, in that while New England has the better record, Tampa Bay has shown a propensity for playing really close games. The Buccaneers limited New Orleans and quarterback Drew Brees to only 16 points this past weekend. If Tampa Bay can perform that well on defense against the Saints, it can surely create a similar result against a struggling New England offense. If New England does indeed score only 16 points in this game, Tampa Bay could very easily win. Even though the Bucs’ offense is not particularly impressive to say the least, the notion that Tampa Bay could score 17 points is entirely reasonable. If Tampa Bay does win this game, the score will indeed be something close to 17-14 or 16-13.
Why New England Will Win
The best online betting sites are not going to count on this, but they do know that New England still has Tom Brady. The Patriots don’t have a lot of healthy pass catchers, it’s true, and that deficiency is certainly limiting New England’s offense right now. Yet, at the end of the day, the Patriots are still led by one of the great quarterbacks of this generation and, moreover, of all time. Brady has to be upset with the way his offense is failing to produce. The Patriots, even with their roster limitations, have to be viewed as a team that knows how to solve problems and which will find ways to improve. Moreover, Brady is going up against Josh Freeman, an unhappy quarterback who wants out of Tampa and played terribly against the New Orleans Saints this past Sunday. Which quarterback will you trust? The answer is obvious.
Who Will Win
For so many of the reasons discussed above, the Patriots should cover the number. The Brady-Freeman quarterback matchup is as lopsided as you’ll find in the NFL this season.
