Chargers Look For More Magic At The Mile High Versus Broncos
The San Diego Chargers are the only team to beat Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos on the road this season. It only makes sense that they get the chance to do it again. The Chargers will clash with the AFC West-rival Broncos in an AFC Divisional round match up on Sunday, with the visiting fans hoping for a little more magic at the Mile High. San Diego had no problem beating up on the Cincinnati Bengals in a 27-10 win as a seven-point underdog last week, so it’s unlikely they will be intimidated as a 10-point online sports betting underdog at Denver this weekend.
AFC Divisional Round
San Diego Chargers @ Denver Broncos
Sunday January 12, 2014 – 4:40 PM ET
Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver, Colorado
NFL Sports Betting Line: Denver – 10
The Broncos understand what’s on the line this week, and it wasn’t long ago they were held without a point through the second and third quarters of a 27-20 loss to this same opponent. The Denver offense was held to just 295 total yards of offense in that loss, and can’t afford not to get going in the third meeting of the year between these teams.
NFL Betting Preview: San Diego Chargers
The Chargers’ defense looked very good in the last meeting between these teams, holding Manning to 289 yards and two touchdowns. However, a big part of that was San Diego’s ability to control the possession game, as former Broncos’ coordinator and Chargers’ head coach Mike McCoy did an excellent job calling plays, with his team holding an unbelievable 38:49-21-11 margin in time of possession. Phillip Rivers threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns in that victory, and running back Ryan Matthews was a stud with 127 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
NFL Betting Preview: Denver Broncos
The Broncos weren’t able to effectively run the ball against San Diego in that last meeting, as they were held to just 18 total rushing yards on 11 carries. Denver needs to be able to move the ball on the ground in order to manage the clock and give the offense some balance, and running back Knowshown Moreno will be asked to lead the way. Manning threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns in that game, but he also had a pick, and the offense stalled in the middle quarters. The Broncos’ defense has been a major question mark all season, and needs to be better against the run in particular in order to force Rivers to make plays and prevent the Chargers from dominating the possession game.
NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick
San Diego came through with the online betting win against Cincinnati as a seven-point underdog last week, and they were underdogs on the road at Denver in week 15, so it’s impossible to write the Chargers off heading in to this game. No opposing coach understands Manning and this Broncos’ team better than their former coordinator in McCoy, and there is plenty of reason to think they will cover, getting 10 points in a game they could very well win straight up.
