Chargers Face The End Of The Line If They Can’t Beat The Chiefs
The San Diego Chargers have basically run out of second chances this season. If they don’t beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, they will almost certainly miss the NFL playoffs.
San Diego Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs – Sunday, November 24
Betting line: Chiefs -5
Why San Diego Will Win
This is a layered sports betting situation, in that the Chargers’ coach might be able to expose the Chiefs even though Kansas City is unquestionably the better team on a larger level. The San Diego Chargers have a head coach, Mike McCoy, who is quite familiar with the rest of the AFC West Division, having served as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator last season. McCoy’s vantage point within the division should give him a very good feel for what the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense will try to achieve in this game. The Chargers know that the second half of the season was always going to be the stretch of time that would reveal San Diego’s strengths and weaknesses in full. Having to play the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs multiple times within a one and a half-month period represents a supreme test, and one knows that McCoy has been waiting for this challenge for a number of weeks. If ever there was a period of time in which McCoy has a chance to prove himself as a worthy head coach of an NFL team, this is it. All of McCoy’s expertise and knowledge should come to the fore in this game, enabling McCoy to give quarterback Philip Rivers the insights that should translate into an improved performance for the Chargers’ offense. If San Diego’s offense can hit big plays down the field against Kansas City’s defense – enough to give the Chargers at least 23 or 24 points – they’ll have a very good chance to win this game.
Why Kansas City Will Win
The Chiefs know that they have to depend on their defense for most of their production and all of their victories. Yet, while that is a small margin on one very real level, it’s a margin the Chiefs have been able to work with throughout the course of this season. Kansas City’s defense knows and expects that it has to be great in order for this team to succeed. This is the Chiefs’ comfort zone; it’s anything but a point of discomfort for head coach Andy Reid and his staff. Alex Smith did not come to the Chiefs thinking that Reid was going to have him air it out each Sunday. This team was always going to rely on its defense, its kicking game (it has one of the best punters in the NFL, Dustin Colquitt), and running back Jamaal Charles for wins, grinding out games with 20-17 and 17-13 scores while shortening the length of each game.
Who Will Win
For bettors, this is a tough game to approach. The Chiefs know how to win very close games, so the notion that Kansas City will win by a field goal holds a lot of legitimacy. Yet, San Diego might be on the verge of giving up on its season. Ultimately, it’s worth betting that the Chargers will make one last desperate attempt to save their season. The Chiefs will beat them… but only by three points.
