Chargers vs Giants Odds - Running game to be the difference in Manning-Rivers showdown

Posted by Stan Simmons on 11/3/2009 4:30:05 PM
NFL linesThe Chargers vs Giants odds pits two quarterbacks that were traded for each other in 2004: Philip Rivers and Eli Manning. Yet both of the teams that they lead have been struggling this year, and when that occurs, the easiest thing to do is learn on the running game. Fortunately for the Giants, they have the better unit, and online betting cappers should expect that to be the difference.

Chargers vs Giants odds maker breakdown: The Storyline
Regardless of what people want to think of the Chargers, they simply aren’t a great football team. They have talent, but without both a running game and a defense that can stop the run, they simply aren’t dominant. The Chargers have four wins this season and three of them have come against the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders.

At one point in the season, the Giants were perfect, but after three straight losses, they’re reeling. The good news for the Giants is that they’ve lost three straight games against NFC division leaders (Arizona, Philadelphia and New Orleans) with two of those games being on the road. They need a win in the worst way right now.

Betting Edge: Giants

Chargers vs Giants odds maker breakdown: Offense
The Chargers offense has become completely one-dimensional. There’s no question that Philip Rivers, Antoio Gates and Vincent Jackson are great weapons in the passing game, but NFL betting fans have acknowledged that the Chargers simply can’t run the ball anymore. The Chargers are averaging 3.1 yards per carry, which is dead last in the NFL. It’s tough to win on the road when your running game is struggling.

Meanwhile, for the Giants, their rushing offense has also struggled. They weren’t able to run against Philadelphia or New Orleans as they fell behind quickly, and they were kept in check against Arizona. The good news is that the Giants should be able to run as much as they want against the Chargers. They are allowing 132.1 yards per game on the ground.

Betting Edge: Even

Chargers vs Giants odds maker breakdown: Defense
The Chargers defense has been abysmal this season, and the people who expected to see a healthy Shawne Merriman are still waiting. On top of that, the loss of nose tackle Jamal Williams has really cramped this defense, as they simply don’t have a capable replacement. They’re getting pushed off the ball rather easily without their Pro Bowl tackle.

For the Giants, their secondary has been shredded by three consecutive quality passing attacks and they’ll have to figure out how to stop another one. The Giants secondary is brutal right now; they gave up six passing plays of 20 yards or longer last week. On top of that, the pass rush isn’t getting home, which means quarterbacks are having ample time to throw.

Betting Edge: Even

Chargers vs Giants odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
Both teams are beat up for this contest. For the Giants, cornerback Aaron Ross will miss this game, and safety Kenny Phillips is out for the season. For the Chargers, as mentioned, Williams is out for the season and Merriman has looked sporadically healthy. The Chargers may have fewer players on the sidelines in this game but a lot of their regulars are playing through pain.

Betting Edge: Chargers

Chargers vs Giants odds for total: 47.5
The sportsbook odds makers have set a high total for this game, and it’s fairly understandable. Both offenses can put up points, and both defenses are weak where the opposing offense is strong. The Giants should be able to run the ball, which should settle their offense, while the Chargers should find plenty of holes in the Giants’ secondary as several other teams have. Over looks good here.

Pick: Over 47.5

Chargers vs Giants betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
The Giants have faced some tough competition over the last few weeks, but this contest could be just what they need. The Giants should be able to run the ball on the Chargers, which means Eli Manning should make less mistakes. Rivers may win the battle in the box score, but the Giants are the better overall team. They are also at home against a West Coast opponent, which should be a big advantage.
