Colts vs Ravens betting odds maker breakdown: The Storyline
The storyline is simple for Indy; can it go undefeated? It seems the Colts’ opponents get closer to ending the streak each week. In the last three games, they beat the 49ers by four points, the Texans by three and the Patriots by one. Are the Ravens “back”? Let’s reserve judgment, as a good high school team could’ve beaten the Browns last Monday. Here’s Baltimore’s chance to show it can contend for a playoff spot.
Colts vs Ravens betting odds maker breakdown: Offense
Each team has a competent offense but does its damage differently. The Colts go as Peyton Manning goes and boy, has he ever been going this season. He leads the NFL in passing yardage and touchdowns and could win another MVP. The Ravens ride rising star Ray Rice, who has emerged as an elite, every-down NFL running back. Baltimore isn’t passing the ball like it did early in the season, though. Rocket-armed Joe Flacco has thrown for 200 or fewer passing yards four times in his last five games; that’s partially a product of Rice’s growing role and partially a product of Flacco lacking a true No. 1 receiver.
The Colts didn’t run the ball well early in the season but they’re warming up. Joseph Addai, thought to be in a timeshare with Donald Brown, is hitting holes hard of late and has earned praise from Colts’ management and NFL betting sharps alike. The Ravens’ offense is good enough not to be a liability but Indy has the superior unit.
Betting Edge: Colts
Colts vs Ravens betting odds maker breakdown: Defense
The Ravens aren’t as terrifying as they were last season but they’re still a strong defensive team, ranking seventh in the NFL. They’re particularly tough against the run, so Addai may lose some momentum this week. Against the pass, the Ravens are typically strong but they’re beatable against star quarterbacks. Phillip Rivers, Tom Brady and Brett Favre all had big days against Baltimore earlier this season. Manning is virtually matchup-proof; he threw for 327 yards and four scores against a Patriots defense that entered Week 10 ranked fourth against the pass.
The Colts are always perceived to be worse defensively than they actually are; they’re a middle-of-the-pack NFL defense. Since they’re certainly not elite against the run, Ray Rice should give them as much trouble as any back has this season. The Colts have to hope they can pressure Joe Flacco, as their depleted secondary could make them vulnerable to the deep ball.
Each team can make plays on “D” but the Ravens are the slightly more accomplished unit and are playing at home, so they have the edge.
Betting Edge: Ravens
Colts vs Ravens betting odds for total: 44.5
I wavered on this one but settled on the over for the sportsbook total. We know Manning will find a way to put points on the board no matter what Baltimore throws at him. We also know Indy could have major problems against Rice. That means this game could be more of a shootout than many people would expect.
Pick: Over 44.5
Colts vs Ravens betting odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
Even though the Colts are accustomed to playing without safety Bob Sanders, his absence still hurts, especially in the run-stopping department. Baltimore likely won’t have Terrell Suggs this week thanks to Brady Quinn’s dirty chop block in the Monday nighter. That will hinder the Ravens’ pass rush and is just one more reason to bet over the total.
Betting Edge: Draw
Colts vs Ravens betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
As much as the Colts have that Peyton Manning invincibility factor, the conditions for a Colts dethroning are ideal this Sunday. It’s a road game versus an aggressive defense and outstanding rushing attack. If a loss can happen, it happens this week. Pick Baltimore.
