Cowboys, Packers Set To Meet In Ice Bowl II This Sunday At Lambeau Field
The Dallas Cowboys reached one of their goals when they defeated the Detroit Lions 24-20 to end their playoff win drought and secured a berth in the NFC Divisional round. Now they face an even tougher test for a chance to reach the NFC Championship game. The Cowboys are set to visit the Green Bay Packers this Sunday afternoon and while they actually posted a better record as the visiting team than they did at home this season they didn’t have to venture in to the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field in January until now. Green Bay was 8-0 at home this season and it is no surprise they are six-point favorites heading in to this weekend’s game where they will look to remain perfect in a game that will be played 47 years after the legendary “Ice Bowl”.
Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers
Sunday January 11. 2015 – 1:00 PM ET
Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin
NFL Betting Line: Green Bay -6
The Packers managed to secure a perfect home record with a week 17 win over the Lions but also suffered a potentially devastating blow when quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a calf injury. All indications are that Rodgers will play this week but how much of an impact the injury has in the freezing temperatures will be worth watching out for this weekend in Green Bay.
NFL Betting Preview: Dallas Cowboys
With freezing temperatures and a heavy wind chill expected the Cowboys are selling “Ice Bowl II” shirts on their website but the focus on the field has to be on capitalizing on the surroundings in order to get a big win. That means a heavy dose of running back DeMarco Murray as they look to pound the rock inside and wear down the Packers defense. Murray will have to do a better job of protecting the football where the freezing temperatures could make his ball security issues relevant. It will also be interesting to see how Tony Romo’s back holds up as there will have to be an even stronger emphasis on protecting him and making sure he doesn’t take too many hits. The Cowboys defense will have its hands full trying to contain Rodgers and all of his weapons and pressure will once again be the key up front. Dallas has to find a way to attack the Green Bay line and generate hits on Rodgers and if they could do that they will be able to test how well that calf injury will hold up in the cold.
NFL Betting Preview: Green Bay Packers
Mike McCarthy and his staff have undoubtedly spent the past two weeks preparing protections and creating a game plan that will limit Rodgers’ exposure to hits while also allowing him to spread the ball around and move the offense effectively. Eddie Lacy should see a ton of touches but the Cowboys defense held up well against the run all season and the success of the Green Bay offense could come down to Rodgers and his ability to stretch the field vertically. The Packers defense has to keep the focus on containing Murray and forcing Romo and company to try and beat them through the air. Every time that Romo drops back there will be a chance to put a big hit on him and Green Bay has to have an attacking attitude up front in order to wear him down and force him to make mistakes.
NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick
The freezing temperatures don’t help either quarterback but Rodgers is more accustomed to the Lambeau cold while Romo’s back could give him major problems. Dallas has been a better team on the road this season but that does not include Lambeau where the Packers are still undefeated. Look for Rodgers, Lacy, and the rest of the Green Bay offense to really set the tone and come through with some big plays early on in order to force the Cowboys to be more one-dimensional on offense and expose Romo. Dallas should be able to keep this game close for a while but it will only be a matter of time before the Packers pull away with a big win at home.
NFL Betting Pick: Green Bay -6
