Dolphins Panthers Betting Predictions – Newton, Panthers Expected To Increase Tempo

Posted by Tony Bryant on 8/13/2012 6:46:42 PM

The Carolina Panthers were a much more competitive team than most sports betting experts projected them to be in 2011, fighting their way to six wins on the shoulders of NFL Rookie of the Year Cam Newton leading the way. If the Panthers are going to continue to progress this season, they will need Newton to take another step forward and get some help from a defense that ranked among the worst in the NFL last season. Neither Newton nor the defense looked very good in Carolina’s 26-13 loss to the Houston Texans to open the preseason, and head coach Ron Rivera expects better from his team on both sides of the ball with the Miami Dolphins in town this Friday for the second week of preseason action.

Miami didn’t fare any better than the Panthers in its exhibition opener losing 20-7 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and unlike the situation in Carolina last year, the Dolphins’ first round rookie quarterback may not be ready to start from day one. An injury to David Garrard could push Ryan Tannehill in to a competition with Matt Moore for the starting job, and both players should see significant playing time this weekend.

Tannehill make actually have a slight edge in the battle with Moore after an impressive debut against the Buccaneers, as he completed 14-of-21 pass attempts for 167 yards and the team’s only touchdown, an 11-yard strike to fullback Charles Clay. Moore finished with just 79 yards on 7-for-12 passing with an interception, and the new staff has made no commitment to him after he started the final 12 games for Miami last season. The challenge for whoever wins the starting job may have gotten a little bit tougher with Chad Johnson’s release earlier this week, but considering he dropped the only pass in his direction in the exhibition opener, it’s safe to say it won’t have too big of an effect. The Dolphins like what they saw from Julius Pruitt in the opener, a tall receiver who had six catches for 52 yards. Running back Reggie Bush had a nice 12-yard run against Tampa Bay, but was held to just five yards on his other four carries.

The fact that the preseason has no bearing on the standings was evident in Newton’s game against Houston, as he completed just two passes for 16 yards and showed little urgency while also taking a couple of sacks. Newton should come out with a stronger effort at home, especially after Derek Anderson complete 9-of-12 attempts for 99 yards as the backup against the Texans, despite an interception. Undrafted running back Tauren Poole averaged 6.5 yards on four carries including a short touchdown run, signs he could be a legitimate third option behind DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Rookie weakside linebacker Luke Kuechly stripped Arian Foster on Houston’s opening drive and also recorded a pair of tackles, exactly the kind of play that has the coaching staff excited about his potential.

NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Rivera should have his team motivated in front of a packed house in Carolina after looking a step slow in the opener against the Texans, and he could give both Williams and Stewart more touches in the run game ahead of Poole. The Panthers are expected to take a major step forward this season, and that should mean more urgency in the second game of the preseason. Miami has major question marks at the quarterback position and is lacking depth in several areas, so it’s unreasonable to expect them to go in to Carolina and do anything more than keep it close after not coming close to covering the football betting spread at home against the Buccaneers last week.
