NFL Betting: Giants Are Genuinely Desperate On The First Sunday Of October
The outlook is dire for the New York Giants, but there are still 12 games to be played this season. The Giants can either try to transform themselves… or they can simply quit.
Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Giants – Sunday, October 6
Betting line: Giants -1
Why Philadelphia Will Win
This is an unexpected situation, and for that reason, it is an intriguing football betting test by any stretch of the imagination. Who would have thought that the Giants, expected to finish at or near the top of the NFC East this season, would be this bad this early in the 2013 campaign? New York has simply been abysmal this season. The Giants’ offensive line has been the ultimate weak point of the team. Big Blue cannot run the ball well, which puts quarterback Eli Manning in predictable passing situations that lead to sacks, hurries, pressures, incomplete passes, and some turnovers. The Giants have faced a brutally tough schedule, but that’s no excuse for getting drilled almost every week and being sloppy with the ball. After the week-one loss to Dallas, a number of commentators pointed out that the Giants lost to the Cowboys by less than a touchdown despite committing six turnovers. The rationale was that if the Giants could just cut down on the turnovers, they’d be fine. Well, the Giants aren’t fine. They’re getting bullied and beaten up by the opposition. Their receivers are so good, but if Manning can’t get the ball to them because he’s always facing a lot of heat in the pocket, New York’s offense won’t amount to anything.
Philadelphia is hardly a complete team. The Eagles have their own sets of issues and concerns to deal with. Yet, if the Eagles can merely contain New York’s running game, they can make life difficult for Eli and put the Giants’ offense into a very familiar box. If Michael Vick can avoid turnovers and use sound judgment on the field, the Eagles – with their tempo-based offense – could keep the Giants’ defense off balance and pull out the win on the road.
Why New York Will Win
The Giants have been bad to this point in the season – really bad. No one can deny it, either. Yet, in a situation such as this, it’s hard to think that a team with this much pride and – for most of the players on the roster – a recent Super Bowl ring will continue to play like dogs. Surely, the odds suggest that New York is going to find its form. Surely, the odds suggest that this team will fight harder as it not only tries to climb back into the divisional race, but save its fading reputation. This is a game the Giants need to win in order to have any realistic hope of making the playoffs, yes, but at this point, the more urgent matter for New York is to save face and avoid further humiliation. This is a powerful motivating force for athletes and coaches. Will this team remain in the dumpster? Don’t bet on it against a Philadelphia club that is below-average in its own right.
Who Will Win
For all the ways in which the Giants are hurting and struggling right now, it seems harder to think that New York will continue to be this bad. The sense here is that the Giants will play with pride and passion, lifting their level of competence to the point that they’ll be able to win.
