Detroit Faces A Dire Situation And Must Win To Have Any Playoff Hopes
The challenge of winning two straight games for the Detroit Lions is greater than one might think. This is a team that should win a lot, but doesn’t manage to do so.
New York Giants @ Detroit Lions – Sunday, December 22
Betting line: Lions -10
Why New York Will Win
This is an unexpected situation, and for that reason, it is an intriguing football betting test by any stretch of the imagination. Who would have thought that the Giants would be two games below the Lions in the NFL standings at this point in the season… with the Lions being 7-7? It’s rather shocking to see New York at 5-9 through 14 games, but that’s where Big Blue finds itself. There’s no question that Detroit will be favored to win this game.
Yet, for all of New York’s very real deficiencies, the Giants might be in a solid position to win against Detroit. The obvious thing that needs to be said about Detroit right now is that the Lions are reeling after losing to Baltimore on a 61-yard field goal by Justin Tucker in the final minute of regulation this past Monday. The Lions’ defense didn’t allow a single touchdown, and yet Detroit fell because of a poor outing by quarterback Matthew Stafford and receiver Calvin Johnson, who both left plenty of points on the field due to numerous mistakes. The Lions were in control of their fate in the NFC North race, but now they’re not. There is a growing sense that head coach Jim Schwartz might not survive the season, so a combination of depression and panic could set in for the Lions, who might not be mentally ready to play this game. As poorly as the Giants have played this season, they might be able to hit some long passes and score touchdowns without having to steadily move the ball in an incremental fashion against the Lions’ defense. If New York can score 24 points or so in this game, Detroit will have to make a lot of plays on offense. Given the extent to which the Lions have struggled in recent weeks, that’s hardly a sure thing.
Why Detroit Will Win
The Lions might be a very frustrating team to watch, and they’re surely a very frustrating team to root for. Moreover, they might not even make the playoffs this season. Yet, they enjoy a clear matchup advantage against the Giants, and they’re also playing at home. The biggest reason Detroit should thrash New York is that the Lions’ strongest point – the defensive line – can take advantage of the Giants’ weakest point, which is the offensive line. Nick Fairley and the rest of Detroit’s front four should dominate a weak New York offensive front that has been allowing lots of sacks and pressures all season long.
Who Will Win
It is true that Detroit is undependable, but the Giants are a feeble team right now. They won’t be able to block the Lions’ pass rushers. Detroit should win this game by a lot.
