Giants Panthers Betting – Panthers’ Offense Shows Progress Against Giants
While Carolina’s online betting odds won’t be much to look at in 2011, they should be improved with a new quarterback and more depth in the passing game. Look for the Panthers to air it out on Saturday when they welcome the New York Giants to town in the first game of the preseason.

Why Bet On New York Giants
The Giants re-signed Ahmad Bradshaw and reworked the contract of Brandon Jacobs, which, on paper, should give them a fearsome running game to go with Eli Manning and the passing game. Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham can be an explosive pair going deep, but the Giants have to find someone who is able to work the middle and the seams as tight end Kevin Boss is gone, and Steve Smith is not only unsigned, but he’s still hurt and may not play until much later in the season. Sage Rosenfels and David Carr were brought in to battle for the backup role behind Manning. The front four should be strong, even if the Giants hang onto the disgruntled Osi Umenyiora, and the secondary is pretty deep with plenty of experience. However, rookie corner Prince Amukamara is out indefinitely because of a broken foot, so someone will have to step up and fill the void. Another rookie, tackle Marvin Austin, will be one to watch.
New York has injury woes at receiver, and the passing game already went downhill with Smith out of the lineup; Boss was Manning’s safety blanket as well, so the Giants will be looking in that area of the field. The Umenyiora drama could be unsettling for the Giants as well, so keep an eye on that story because he could become a distraction. New York should have just traded him in the first place, instead of closing the window on a deal.
Why Bet On Carolina Panthers
The Panthers have a couple of things to be excited about: Cam Newton, the No.1 overall pick, and the fact that receiver Steve Smith wants to retire a Panther. Smith won’t play in this game because of a broken finger, but at least he’ll be back for the regular season. Coach Ron Rivera said that he’ll start Jimmy Clausen in the opener, but Newton will get plenty of time and is clearly the future in Carolina. The Panthers still have the duo of DeAngelo Williams (who has a new contract) and Jonathan Stewart in the backfield, and picking up tight end Greg Olsen was a nice addition as well. Carolina also made a big splash to improve their pass rush by re-signing end Charles Johnson, and they can only hope that he doesn’t take his foot off the gas after getting a huge deal.
But NFL betting players shouldn’t have too much faith in Carolina this year. The Panthers aren’t good at receiver outside of Smith, and whoever the quarterback is will need more weapons in the aerial attack. They also have some injuries on defense that threatens a group that wasn’t that deep in the first place. Rookies Greg Hardy and Brandon Hogan may miss the year, while Jason Williams and Ron Edwards shouldn’t be counted on much in 2011, either. Last year, the Carolina defense kept the Panthers in games. This year may be a different story.
How It Will Play Out
The Panthers are favored at home by two points in this NFL betting matchup, and the Giants are 3-2 SU and ATS in their last five regular-season meetings with the Panthers, with the last four meetings going over the posted total. This obviously won’t have the intensity of a regular-season game, but it definitely won’t be your typical preseason game as the players will be eager to get out on the field in a game situation.
The Carolina offense may be a little better this year and they should be able to go at the Giants, especially in the air. The Giants can control this game on the ground because Carolina’s run defense is awful, but they also need to see what they have in terms of receivers.
