Why Tampa Bay Will Win
If you want to make a winning bet on professional football, picking against the Oakland Raiders is certainly a reasonable play. Ironically, the fact that the Raiders have won each of their last two games – against Jacksonville and then Kansas City – suggests that the odds are going to work against Oakland this weekend. The Raiders did not look particularly good in either one of those wins against two of the five worst teams in the league. Oakland fell behind Jacksonville, 17-3, before scrambling to beat the Jaguars. The Raiders then mucked it up with a Kansas City team that was playing with Brady Quinn as its starting quarterback… and then lost Quinn to an injury. The Raiders did not pull away from the Chiefs in the first half; it took them over three quarters to finally subdue Kansas City.
Tampa Bay is clearly playing at a much higher level than either Jacksonville or Kansas City. The Buccaneers throttled Minnesota by 19 points on the road last Thursday. Running back Doug Martin exploded for 214 all-purpose yards while carrying a considerable workload. Martin rushed for 135 yards on 29 carries, and he collected 79 receiving yards on three catches. Martin scored one touchdown as a runner and another as a passer, emerging for head coach Greg Schiano in October. Tampa Bay now has a more complete and diversified offense than it used to; it doesn’t just have to rely on chucking the ball downfield in the passing game. This is a more subtle and nuanced attack that can pry open opportunities with screens and other change-of-pace plays. Oakland will have a hard time defending this version of the Bucs, as opposed to the team that struggled through the first five weeks of the season.
Why Oakland Will Win
When NFL betting students analyze this game, they have good reason to pick the Raiders. It's true that Jacksonville and Kansas City are terrible teams, but this year's NFL season has been a study in volatility. The San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, and other teams that were highly regarded before the start of the season have all lost games they were expected to win. The American Football Conference is startlingly weak and laden with mediocrity. Teams cannot take winning for granted – they have to go out and achieve each gameday, each time they take the field. Oakland's wins over Jacksonville and Kansas City were not works of art, but they did show that the Raiders are slowly maturing under their first-year head coach, Dennis Allen. This team is competent on defense, so much so that as long as quarterback Carson Palmer doesn't commit turnovers, it stands a good chance of winning at home.
Who Will Win
It’s perhaps a bit surprising, but it's true: Tampa Bay's offense is clearly better than Oakland's offense. The Buccaneers will outscore the Raiders and get more production from more sources. Pick Tampa Bay on the road.
