How To Bet On Chargers Jets – McElroy Takes Center Stage As The Jets Host The Chargers
The New York Jets will not be starting Mark Sanchez at quarterback this weekend against the San Diego Chargers. This means the Jets will start Tim Tebow at quarterback, right? Wrong.
San Diego Chargers @ New York Jets – Sunday, December 23
Betting line: New York Jets -1
Why San Diego Will Win
The NFL betting calculus suggests that this week 16 game between the Chargers and the Jets is up for grabs. The reasons to take each of these teams begin and end with the opponent and have very little to do with the strengths of each side. Therefore, the case for San Diego rests on the ability of the Jets to play worse than the Chargers. That could very well happen this weekend.
The Jets are trotting out quarterback Greg McElroy as their starter in place of Mark Sanchez. The Jets are not playing Tim Tebow, an acknowledgment of Tebow's injuries but also an admission that they're just not comfortable with having him play quarterback for the balance of a game. McElroy's presence as a third-string quarterback in the role of a starter invites the possibility of numerous mistakes. A few turnovers, especially in the wrong end of the field, would enable San Diego to claim unquestioned control of this contest. A pick-six in a fragile, tipping-point moment in the second half would give the Bolts all they need to gain another road win in the past month (San Diego also won at Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, so it's not as though the Chargers can't win in cold weather). The Chargers have had a terrible season by any measurement, but if they can't beat a third-string quarterback, they will hit a new low. They should be able to get the job done this time around, and the Jets will enable them to do so.
Why New York Will Win
When football betting pundits look at this game from the Jets' perspective, they're going to note that the Chargers look like a team that's just playing out the string at this point. San Diego briefly surged with enthusiasm and verve the week after it was announced that head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith would be fired at the end of the season.
Wanting to play hard for their outgoing coach, the Chargers thumped the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh, 34-24 (the game wasn't that close; San Diego led by at least 17 for much of the day before allowing a late garbage touchdown…), on Dec. 2. It seemed that another strong December was in store for the Chargers, who have generally played quite well in December during Turner's tenure. However, the next two weeks witnessed a pair of home-field losses to Cincinnati and then Carolina. The loss to Carolina was not competitive from the start.
The Chargers fell behind 14-0 in a flash and never made a serious response. It seems that the pilot light is out in San Diego, and as a result, the Chargers might not care very much about playing the Jets, giving New York and Greg McElroy a path to victory.
Who Will Win
It’s quite possible that San Diego won't care about this game, but New York's offense is likely to remain so inept that the Chargers' defense should score at least one touchdown. That's a good reason to pick San Diego.
