Bills Try To Grab A Confidence-Building Win Before Their Bye Week
After two full months of action, the Buffalo Bills are a worn-down and tired team. They are relishing the prospect of a week of rest. First, though, they must play the New York Jets.
New York Jets @ Buffalo Bills – Sunday, November 17
Sports betting line: Pick ‘em
Why New York Will Win
This is a situation in which the Jets should have the upper hand. Coach Rex Ryan has done one of the best jobs in the NFL this season, creating a situation in which his quarterback, Geno Smith, doesn’t have to be a hero every week and can simply manage a game. The Jets have given Smith a game plan in which the West Virginia product throws safe, short, high-percentage passes and doesn’t take unnecessary risks on downfield tosses. The Jets have developed a reasonably effective ball-control offense that enables them to maintain good field position and put their defense in a good spot. The Jets’ calling card is their defense, and while it has been exceptionally good in home games this season, it remains solid in most situations. New York should therefore be able to clamp down on a Buffalo offense that was very impotent this past Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bills brought opening day starter E.J. Manuel back into the fold at quarterback after the Florida State star got injured in early October against the Cleveland Browns. Manuel looked rusty and unsure of himself against Pittsburgh. Moreover, his offensive line didn’t protect him very well, which meant that Manuel had to constantly throw short to his checkdowns all game long. The Bills are in a situation where, one week before their bye week, they might not be able to get Manuel up to full speed. It is more likely than not that the Bills will struggle this week. After the bye, they might have a chance to finish the season on a much higher note, but right now, Buffalo is disorganized and scrambling, and this plays right into the Jets’ hands.
Why Buffalo Will Win
When the online betting experts tackle this clash, they will point out that the Jets have been a lot better at home this season than on the road. The Jets have won only one game away from home this season, a Monday Night Football win over the lowly Atlanta Falcons. The Jets’ defense gets more energy from its home crowd, but on the road, New York struggles to generate its own emotional power. This team wobbles in the face of on-field adversity. The Jets’ road win in Atlanta was the product of a fast start, but if the Jets don’t get that fast start on the road, they don’t persevere. Buffalo can certainly get an early lead and create doubt in the minds of the Jets’ players, who have to win this game to show that they truly deserve to be seen as a playoff-caliber team in the NFL.
Who Will Win
The Bills are going to try hard and put in a strong effort before their bye week, but the Jets have the better defense and should be fresher, both physically and mentally.
