Falcons Have Run Out Of Second Chances, Must Beat Jets On Monday
The Atlanta Falcons are 0-2 against the AFC East after losing to the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots in consecutive weeks. They now face the New York Jets and are under the gun.
New York Jets @ Atlanta Falcons – Monday, October 7
Betting line: Falcons -10
Why New York Will Win
When football bettors are confronted by the first month of an NFL season, they typically find a mixture of surprises and familiar truths, but the nuance is that you just don’t know where the surprises and the expected developments will come from. Some situations are predictable while others spin off in other directions that are contrary to the conventional or prevailing wisdom. In the case of these two teams, who would have thought that the Jets would have a better record than the Falcons after four games? It’s true that Atlanta has had a much tougher schedule than New York, but even then, the Falcons were thought to be better than Miami in week three, while the Jets were not thought to be as good as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week one. The fact that these teams don’t at least have the same records – and that the Jets are one game better in the standings – has to be a genuine shock to anyone who follows pro football on a consistent basis. Atlanta has moved the ball consistently, but the Falcons have been a complete horror show in the red zone, where they have scored touchdowns less than 30 percent of the time over the past two weeks. Atlanta has scored touchdowns on just three of 11 red-zone trips the past two weeks, and the Falcons have failed to score touchdowns on 11 of 18 red-zone possessions this season, nearly two-thirds of all their ventures into the final 20 yards of the field. That’s an appalling total, and it stems from the undeniably poor play of Matt Ryan. This past Sunday against New England, Atlanta’s quarterback missed a wide-open throw on fourth and three inside the New England 10 that would have given the Falcons a first down. Later in the game, a third-down pass inside the 10 was dropped, costing Atlanta yet another touchdown. If the Jets can make Atlanta a bad red-zone team once again, the Falcons might not score enough to win.
Why Atlanta Will Win
When people in the sports betting realm try to assess this game, they’re going to look to the fact that the Jets got hammered by the Tennessee Titans last week even though Tennessee starting quarterback Jake Locker got knocked out of the game midway through with an injury. The Jets looked absolutely atrocious in Nashville and reinforced the notion throughout the NFL that they are a respectable 2-2 only because of their schedule. The Jets have wins over mediocre teams from Tampa Bay and Buffalo. As soon as they play a team with Atlanta’s talent, they shouldn’t be able to stay in the ring very long.
Who Will Win
This is a mismatch, and even though Atlanta has a worse record, the Falcons are far more skilled than the Jets at just about every position. Atlanta should roll here.
