Jets vs Giants Odds - Giants ‘D’ too tough for new starter Mark Sanchez

Posted by Stan Simmons on 4/18/2012 11:14:31 AM
NFL linesThe Jets vs Giants odds signal the beginning of the Mark Sanchez era. Perhaps sooner than NFL odds followers expected, the Jets named him their Week 1 starting quarterback. That means he has a lot of work to do over the next two weeks. Can he handle the aggressive, deep Giants “D” this Saturday?

Jets vs Giants odds: Giants -3.5

  • PICK: Giants -3.5

Jets vs Giants odds maker breakdown: Offense

OK, Mark Sanchez. Time to hone those skills while you still can. The newly anointed starter didn’t exactly look like a starter on Monday night, throwing a touchdown pass but going just three for eight and tossing an interception, but he was against the deadly Ravens “D.” He’ll have some decent weapons at his disposal as the Jets acclimatize Leon Washington to a bigger role and rookie Shonn Greene continues to pound defenses.

The Giants’ receiver battle rages on and Hakeem Nicks isn’t quite ready to bow out yet. The rookie caught a 55-yard pass last week and will see plenty of looks. Big Brandon Jacobs and speedy Ahmad Bradshaw probably won’t see extensive action in the backfield as they rest for the regular season, but third-stringer Danny Ware has looked explosive and should give the Jets defense trouble. Eli Manning hasn’t played a ton so far in the preseason and may see just enough time to influence this betting matchup, as well as put some points on the board.

Jets vs Giants odds maker breakdown: Defense

Both teams bring plenty to the table defensively entering this sportsbook matchup. Many of the Giants’ Pro Bowl starters are either injured or resting, but they’re so deep that they’ll still throw plenty of heat at Sanchez. Mathias Kiwanuka has been particularly interesting, moving from end to linebacker to tackle and back again, so he could make a big impact on Saturday.

The Jets’ defense looks promising under Rex Ryan, but the advantage here goes to the Giants simply because they’ll probably force young Sanchez into a few bad decisions.

Jets vs Giants odds maker breakdown: Special Teams

The Jets’ special teams seem a bit more stable at the moment. Jay Feely is flourishing in the preseason and Leon Washington is among the league’s best in the return game. Because of the receiver position battle, the Giants’ return game is muddy. Who gets the duty? Mario Manningham? Sinorice Moss? The Jets have the edge here.

Jets vs Giants odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries

Both teams have their share of high-impact guys nicked up, though none of the injuries are too serious. The Giants’ interior “D” may be without Antonio Pierce and free-agent signing Chris Canty. The Jets have less depth, so their missing starters – Calvin Pace and Shaun Ellis to suspension and possibly Kris Jenkins to a calf injury – will hurt them more.

Betting Edge: Giants

Jets vs Giants betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick

The Jets have more to learn about their offense and will thus play hard, but the Giants are so deep defensively that they’ll give Sanchez and company as much trouble as the Ravens did. The Giants should win what should be a low-scoring affair.

STAN’S PICK: Giants -3.5
