New England Patriots Betting Tips – Patriots Looking To Finally Break Through For Elusive Super Bowl Title

Posted by Tony Bryant on 7/5/2012 4:16:05 PM

It seems more than a little unreasonable to call a team that has secured nine division titles, five AFC championships, and three Super Bowl titles over the last 11 seasons underachievers, but heading in to the 2012 season there is a sense that the New England Patriots haven’t maximized their NFL betting potential since winning their last Vince Lombardi trophy in 2004. Tom Brady and the Patriots fell short in the Super Bowl against Eli Manning and the New York Giants for the second time in five seasons this past February, but after a little retooling on both sides of the ball, this could be the season they finally deliver again on their Super Bowl aspirations.

Head Coach: Bill Belichick
Offensive Coordinator: Josh McDaniels
Defensive Coordinator: Matt Patricia
Owner: Robert Kraft
Stadium: Gillette Stadium
Capacity: 68, 756
Super Bowl Wins: 3

Offense

New England didn’t have to do much in terms of upgrading a passing attack that ranked second in the NFL a year ago, yet somehow they managed to do exactly that. The Patriots signed free agent Brandon Lloyd to give Brady a wide receiver that can stretch the field and be a deep threat, and also brought back Jabar Gaffney and Donte Stallworth to give them more options in addition to Wes Welker and Deion Branch. In Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, New England owns the best tight end tandem in the league, and they should be even better with another year of experience together. The Patriots felt they needed to improve in the run game as well, so they cut ties with the BenJarvus Green-Ellis and signed Joseph Addai, and will give second-year backs Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen more touches. Mammoth guard Robert Gallery should also help in the run game, with Brian Waters another veteran guard expected to help improve the play on the line.

Defense

For as good as the Patriots’ offense was a year ago, the defense was awful once again. New England’s pass defense was the second-worst in the NFL, and the run defense wasn’t much better, also finishing in the bottom-half of the league. The Patriots addressed this problem with a massive haul in the draft, taking six-straight defensive players to inject some talent immediately. The highlight of the draft is defensive end Chandler Jones, the brother of UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who will help with the pass rush immediately, while fellow first round pick Donta Hightower works in the middle next to Brandon Spikes. The Patriots still have some solid pieces in nose tackle Vince Wilfork, who was among the best at his position in the game a year ago, as well as Spikes, and if they can get more from the pass rush it will certainly help the secondary. Cornerback Devin McCourty took a step back last sportsbook season after an excellent rookie campaign, and will be expected to bounce back with Ras-I Dowling, Kyle Arrington, Sterling Moore, and free agent addition Will Allen battling for the other starting spot. New England really likes Patrick Chung to start at safety when he is healthy, and they drafted Tavon Wilson in the second round to push for time next to him in the starting lineup.

Special Teams

Kicker Stephen Gostkowski consistently ranks among the best in the game year after years, but while the Patriots are fine in the kicking game, they need more explosiveness from the return units. Wide receivers Matt Slater and Julian Edelman will compete for touches in the return game, with Donte Stallworth another possibility, and New England will need more big plays from whoever locks down the starting role.

Grade: B -

Prediction

The Patriots reloaded in the offseason and are ready to challenge for a Super bowl once again. While the division shouldn’t be a problem even with the Bills and Jets both showing improvement, New England will need much more from its defense in order to handle the top contenders in the AFC playoffs. The Patriots have won AFC Championships in two of the past five seasons but failed to win the one that matters most, but this could be the year they shed the label of sports bet underachievers and bring home another Vince Lombardi trophy.
