Packers Chargers Betting Predictions – San Diego Gets Edge In Preseason Opener Over Green Bay
Sports betting sharps may find it difficult to handicap preseason football in the NFL because you don’t know who is playing, or you may not know any of the players on the field. Green Bay heads to San Diego for their preseason opener, and the home team should get the nod in front of their fans.

Why Bet On Green Bay Packers
Last season may have been the most disappointing 15-1 season in the history of the NFL, but Aaron Rodgers and company won’t put themselves through the ringer against to go undefeated as they clearly ran out of gas late in the season after losing in Kansas City in Week 15. The biggest question for the Packers heading into this season is who will back up Rodgers, the reigning NFL MVP, as Matt Flynn put up massive numbers in a meaningless game and ended up signing a decent deal with Seattle. Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman will battle it out throughout the preseason as Rodgers won’t get many reps, and Harrell has the edge right now, but things could change in a heartbeat. There are also rumors that the Packers are looking to trade for Colt McCoy, who has been a huge bust in Cleveland.
It could also be the first appearance for Jeff Saturday in a Packers uniform after he left Indianapolis, although, like Rodgers, he may only get a series or two. The line has been the weak part of Green Bay’s offense in recent years and they’ve been let off the hook by Rodgers’ quick release and the opposition’s lack of willingness to blitz because of all the weapons in the Green Bay attack. This will be an area to watch on Saturday and throughout the preseason.
Why Bet On San Diego Chargers
The Chargers may have been the biggest NFL betting disappointment in the league last year, and a six-game skid in the middle of the season sealed their fate. They lost five games by a touchdown or less, including twice in overtime and the other loss came by 11 points on the road in Chicago. Philip Rivers had an atrocious season and is looking to bounce back, but you may not see him at all on Thursday; one series, if at all. Charlie Whitehurst is slated to be the backup, but he sprained his knee in practice and will be out for a couple of weeks. That leaves rookie Jarrett Lee, who was less than impressive at LSU, and Kevin O’Connell, who was signed this week when Whitehurst got hurt.
San Diego also looked to improve on defense through the draft, picking linebacker Melvin Ingram in the first round and safety Brandon Taylor in the third round. Taylor is being touted to take over the starting spot at strong safety and at LSU, where he was a teammate of Lee’s, and he was a part of one of the best secondaries we’ve seen in the college game in a long time. Taylor is more of a hard hitter, but he has a solid football IQ and he’ll figure the game out with more reps, which is why he could get more than you think next Thursday. The preseason is a proving time for rookies as they get used to the speed of the game and the complexities of the NFL.
How It Will Play Out
The Chargers will be a 2.5-point favorite at home for this NFL betting kickoff, but you can bet that the Packers would be favored on the road if this was a regular-season game. The Packers are one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season after last year’s disappointment, but the Chargers are being tipped to bounce back from their terrible season. You won’t really get a sense of what each team has until the third preseason game, which is generally the game in which teams play their starters for the most time.
This game will be all about rookies and fringe players looking to make the roster, so don’t expect a lot of fancy plays and good work; it is probably going to be sloppy, especially as it is the first game action that many have had since last December or January. At home, lower-tier players tend to play better, so roll with San Diego in your online betting picks.
