Packers Lions Betting – Pack Remain Unbeaten In Thanksgiving Affair With Lions
Online betting players have been waiting for Green Bay-Detroit for most of the season, and both teams are coming off strong offensive performances. But defense will be the story on Thursday, even though there should be a lot of points scored as the Packers will feast on Detroit turnovers, while taking care of the ball.
What: NFL Betting
When: Thursday, November 24th, 12:30 PM ET
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, MI
Pick: Green Bay Packers -6
Why Bet On Green Bay Packers (10-0 SU, 7-3 ATS)
The fourth-ranked Green Bay offense was deadly efficient in a 35-26 win over Tampa Bay at home, scoring on four of their five trips to the red zone. Aaron Rodgers was 23-of-34 for 299 yards, three touchdowns and a pick, his fourth of the season, while Jordy Nelson had six catches for 123 yards and a pair of scores for the Packers, who also took advantage of three Tampa Bay penalties that moved the chains for them. Defensively, cornerback Tramon Williams had a couple of interceptions while leading the unit with nine tackles, and Green Bay managed a couple of sacks, but they still allowed 455 yards and 26 points against a Tampa Bay offense that is ranked 16th in the NFL.
Receiver Greg Jennings (shin) and running back James Starks (knee) are preliminary worries for this massive Thanksgiving game, and injuries seem to be the only thing capable of derailing their NFL betting odds. But even those may not matter as the Packers have a ton of offensive weapons who can step up; veteran Donald Driver is getting back into the mix and James Jones hasn’t received a lot of targets recently. Ryan Grant may receive a few more carries with Starks out of the lineup, but as long as Rodgers is still on top of his game, Green Bay should be fine. Avoiding the Detroit pass rush will be their No.1 priority and remember, the Lions knocked Rodgers out of last year’s meeting in Week 14 with a concussion, and Detroit came away with a 7-3 win.
Why Bet On Detroit Lions (7-3 SU, 6-3-1 ATS)
It didn’t look like Detroit would end up coming back from a 24-7 second-quarter deficit against Carolina, much less like they would cover the spread, but the Lions pulled it together for a 49-35 victory over the Panthers. Matt Stafford was 28-of-36 for 335 yards, five touchdowns and two picks, but the star of the show may have been Kevin Smith, who ran for 140 yards and two scores on 16 carries; the Lions had released Smith, who was released by the team because of multiple injuries, and he was only re-signed three weeks ago because of all of the other injuries to Detroit’s backfield. The Lions will need more of that as a lack of a running game has hurt them at times this season, but Smith has a lot to prove. Defensively, the Lions got on track as the game wore on and picked off Carolina’s Cam Newton four bvtimes, but they also gave the Panthers five first downs because of penalties. Discipline, or a lack of it, will be the Lions’ downfall and they’re already got a reputation of being a dirty team.
Running back Jahvid Best (concussion) still has to be cleared, but if Smith can play even half of well as he did on Sunday, the Lions will be fine. Stafford (hand) also didn’t appear to struggle with his ailing hand. But this is a massive game for more ways than one for Detroit: they’re tied with Chicago in the NFC North, three games behind Green Bay and the Bears just lost quarterback Jay Cutler for the rest of the season, so the Lions have a good chance to snag the second spot in the North and possibly, a wild card. Also, why wouldn’t you want to be the team that ruins Green Bay’s chance for a 16-0 season, especially on Thanksgiving?
How It Will Play Out
The Packers are a 6-point NFL betting favorite on the road in Detroit, where they are 4-1 SU and ATS in their last five games, with the past two falling under the posted total. Again, you have to factor in Rodgers’ injury last season, but the teams are far more evenly matched. The Packers are 3-2 ATS on the road, while Detroit has the same record at home.
This has all the markings of a firefight, but the Green Bay defense gets the edge and they should be able to force a couple of turnovers, giving the Packers what they need to cover the spread. Detroit’s defense doesn’t have the discipline to hang with Green Bay yet, and Rodgers won’t throw four picks like Newton did on Sunday. Take Green Bay to cover the sports betting spread on Thanksgiving.Packers Lions Betting Pick: Green Bay Packers
