NFL Preseason Betting: Packers Just Want To Get Through The Preseason Pain-Free
The angle on the second game of the NFL preseason for the Green Bay Packers seems to present an attractive opportunity for football bettors, even though preseason games are inherently fragile.
Keep An Eye On: St. Louis’ Passing Game
This is and must be the point of focus for the Rams, who know that quarterback Sam Bradford needs to hit his stride this season. Longtime NFL observers know that in the preseason, the third game in the set of four is generally the most important contest, the one that most closely resembles a regular season game. Starters get the most reps in game three of a preseason schedule, prepping them for the live game speed of week 1 of the regular season. Those same starters get held out of the fourth and final preseason game so that coaches can make final evaluations of backups and pare down the roster to 53 players for the start of the regular season.
This is not the third game of the preseason, of course, but it is the second game, the next closest thing. The first game of a preseason is also a time when backups receive an overwhelming share of playing time. It’s in the second game when you’ll see the playing time increase for starters if those starters need to prove themselves. Bradford and the rest of the Rams’ offense has to be able to develop a rhythm so that when St. Louis begins play for real on Sept. 8, this team will be able to contend for a playoff spot in the vicious NFC West Division. Sport betting lines in the regular season will rise or fall for St. Louis depending on the quality of its passing attack. There won’t be a more significant aspect of this tilt from an X-and-O standpoint.
Watch The Progress Of: Sam Shields (Packers), Sam Bradford (Rams)
The challenge in this game for the Rams, with Bradford as the leader of the team’s passing game, is clear. The urgency attached to this game for St. Louis is precisely what makes pass defense the big opportunity – and challenge – for Green Bay. The Packers’ secondary did not play particularly well in the team’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, and since Green Bay’s offense is going to be great this season, the development of the defense is the obvious priority in the preseason. The defensive line needs a lot of work as well, but in the preseason, when playbooks are kept simple, the need for a strong defensive line is not quite as paramount as it would be in the regular season. In the preseason, a coaching staff needs to know that its corners can cover, and against Arizona, Green Bay slipped in that regard. Sam Shields and his teammates in the secondary need to come up big. If the Packers’ secondary continues to struggle, the best online betting sites are going to be more convinced that the San Francisco 49ers will rip Green Bay in the regular season opener.
This is an intriguing online sports betting situation, in that Green Bay seems to be soft-pedaling things on offense. The Rams appear to have a much greater need to play well in the preseason. IF ever there was a time to bet on a preseason game, this is it. St. Louis is an attractive choice.
Odds: Rams -3
Pick: Rams -3
