What’s On The Line
The Patriots (6-2) may have been caught looking ahead to this matchup as they were beaten soundly by the Cleveland Browns, falling 34-14 due to three turnovers. The Steelers (6-2) matched New England with a 27-20 win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, setting up a showdown of NFL betting favorites in the AFC. Since the turn of the century, one of these teams have been in the AFC championship game seven times, including head-to-head on two occasions, both won by New England in Pittsburgh. This could very well be an AFC championship preview.
Offensive Matchups: Patriots Steelers Betting
New England is only 20th in the league offensively, but they’re second in points scored, and as long as you’re putting points up, everything else falls into place. Still, the performance against the Browns may be worrying as the Patriots had three turnovers. Tom Brady was decent, going 19-of-36 for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the Patriots had the ball for just over 21 minutes, and they were 3-of-11 on third down.
The Steelers were efficient against the Bengals, converting six of their 14 third-down attempts, and they were balanced. Rashard Mendenall had 99 yards, a score and was a general load to bring down. Ben Roethlisberger went 17-of-27 from 163 yards, a touchdown and a pick, and he was active in the pocket, keeping Cincinnati at bay. Mike Wallace had 110 yards and a touchdown, and he was a deep threat all night long. Pittsburgh is 28th offensively, but those numbers are skewed because Roethlisberger missed the first four games of the year.

Defensive Matchups: Patriots Steelers Betting
If New England is going to be a real NFL betting favorite, however, they have to do something about their defense, which is ranked 29th. Cleveland gouged them on the ground for 230 yards, and they made Peyton Hillis look like Jim Brown. The Patriots are just inconsistent on this side of the ball, and it’s usually the pass defense that gets them in trouble, but if the Patriots don’t step up their game against the run, New England is going to be in a lot of trouble against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is, well, Pittsburgh: they gave up a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but for most of the game, the Steelers’ defense was the dominant force on Monday night. They sacked Carson Palmer four times, pressured him countless others and forced a couple of turnovers. 35-year-old James Farrior had 11 tackles, and he may be the most underrated linebacker in football. The Steelers have to focus more in the fourth quarter, but they’re still the best defense in the league, whether they’re ranked first or fourth (their current position).

Notable Injuries: Patriots Steelers Betting
For New England, kicker Stephen Gostowski (leg) had to leave the Cleveland game and receiver Wes Welker had to take his place, so watch him, as well as center Dan Koppen (undisclosed).
The Steelers managed to make it through the Monday night game unscathed, but watch the injury report on Wednesday.

Outlook and Pick: Patriots Steelers Betting
NFL betting odds will likely have the Steelers favored, but it won’t be by much, if at all. The Patriots are 1-4 both SU and ATS in their last five home games against the Patriots, with four of those games going over the posted total. The Patriots just seem to have Pittsburgh’s number, but we’re taking the Steelers on Sunday night. You never know which version of the New England defense is going to show up, and it looks like the Steelers are starting to roll on that side of the ball. Expect lots of blitzing from Pittsburgh as New England doesn’t have a deep threat with Randy Moss gone. Look for Pittsburgh to fire the first shot in a sports betting win on Sunday.
