Why Jacksonville Will Win
Each NFL preseason contest teases you in much the same way that an online poker game does. There's a distinct feel that the two competing teams are bluffing at times, masking what is and isn't reality while the competition moves along. The Jacksonville Jaguars are not as good a team as the New York Giants, and the first half of last weekend's game between the two teams reaffirmed as much. Jacksonville got blasted out of the water, 24-7, in the first 28 minutes of that clash. The Giants' first-team players comprehensively outplayed the Jaugars' first-teamers, reaffirming their championship credentials while letting the Jacksonville roster know just how far it has to go to become a part of the NFL's elite. Yet, Jacksonville's reserves – motivated by the hunger to secure roster spots (part of the economy of NFL preseason psychology) – made a huge second-half push, outscoring the Giants 18-7 in the second half to steal a 32-31 win. We could very well see another such scenario in week two of the NFL preseason.
One would be quick to acknowledge that the New Orleans Saints are a better team than the Jaguars, much as the Giants are superior to Jacksonville. However, if New Orleans gets the jump on Jacksonville in the first 15 minutes, the Saints are not going to keep their starters on the field. Three more quarters will afford the Jaguars many opportunities to not only register a comeback, but build more of a track record as a team that can absorb a punch and keep coming at the opposition. This is a healthy locker-room culture that's developing in Jacksonville, and so even if New Orleans scores early, the Jaguars stand a very legitimate chance of being able to pull through on the road.
Why New Orleans Will Win
When NFL betting commentators voice their opinions on this game, they're going to be very aware of Jacksonville's mammoth comeback against the New York Giants last week, but they're also going to say something very simple about the New Orleans Saints: Very simply, this team has not yet done anything of consequence on offense, and it will want to change that reality sooner rather than later. New Orleans has played two preseason games this summer, and on both occasions, the Saints have failed to reach even the modest total of 20 points. Drew Brees knows that he needs to save ammunition for the regular season, but by the same token, one of the NFL's best quarterbacks knows that he needs to show at least some degree of firepower right now. The Saints don't want to project too much weakness to the rest of the league in this "BountyGate" season, a season in which other teams will try to pounce on the Saints' thin defense.
Who Will Win
It’s true that Jacksonville might steal this win late, but the feeling here is that New Orleans will try to make a harder push and place some emphasis on scoring at a good clip. Pick the Saints.
