Why Minnesota Will Win
When poker is played, surprises can always unfold, and the biggest surprise in the NFL after roughly one third of a season is the Vikings. Quarterback Christian Ponder didn't throw an interception in his first four games, and even though he finally threw a pick this past Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, it didn't matter. Minnesota flattened Tennessee by a big margin, remaining tied for first place in the NFC North with a 4-1 record, two games ahead of the Green Bay Packers and two and a half games ahead of the Detroit Lions. The Vikings' defense, which was thought to be manifestly inadequate before this season began, has been magnificent this season. It has not allowed more than 23 points to any opponent in five games. It has not allowed more than 13 points in three of its five contests. The preseason worries about a thin linebacking corps have been expunged. The doubts about the overall toughness and resourcefulness of this group have been quieted, at least for the moment.
Washington, as is well known around the league, is depleted on defense, missing multiple starters for the remainder of the season due to injuries. The Redskins are scrambling, trying to put the pieces together on their team. Their quarterback, Robert Griffin III, got knocked out of last weekend's game against Atlanta with a concussion. They're simply not in an ideal position to fend off the Vikings this weekend.
Why Washington Will Win
Betting analysts have to be fascinated by the Vikings. Just how long is this improbable run going to continue? There are reasons to be skeptical about Minnesota, even though Washington is dealing with injuries at a lot of positions.
The first thing that jumps out about Minnesota's 4-1 record is that three of the Vikings' five games have been against unproven teams. The Vikes played three of the four teams in the AFC South, a division in which the only good team is the Houston Texans. The one team Minnesota has not yet played from that division is, in fact, Houston. The Vikings took care of Jacksonville and Tennessee while losing to Indianapolis. When one also realizes that Minnesota took on the underachieving and struggling Detroit Lions, who are 1-3 at the moment, the Vikings' record is based on wins against losing teams. The Vikes' only win against an opponent with a winning record came against the San Francisco 49ers, and that game was at home.
Washington might be banged up at the moment, but the Redskins very nearly beat the undefeated Atlanta Falcons last week at home. They can definitely take down the Vikings.
Who Will Win
The Vikings are not yet a fully proven team. They have to win road games in the NFC to show that they're for real. Skepticism wins – take the Redskins on their home turf.
