Why New York Will Win
When making your next betting play at any of several online sports books, you should always give a certain amount of consideration in an NFL preseason opener to the team that has a lot to prove. The New York Jets certainly have a lot to prove as they open their preseason slate against the Cincinnati Bengals. New York came apart at the seams last season… not just in terms of the level of its performance on offense, but in terms of the attitudes of the players on that offense. A lot of dissension and griping filled a torn locker room that collapsed under the weight of pressure, expectations, and the scrutiny associated with America's largest media market.
The Jets couldn't handle the heat after making two straight appearances in the AFC Championship Game. Now, as a result of their struggles in 2011, the organization has brought in Tim Tebow to challenge incumbent Mark Sanchez for the starting quarterback spot. Say what you want about the Jets' prospects this season – they're uncertain – but in a preseason setting, the Jets are likely to play with more zest and vigor than most NFL ballclubs. Sanchez and Tebow are not going to be typical quarterbacks in the preseason.
Head coach Rex Ryan will give both of them a lot of work. They're not going to play just one or two series and then take it easy; they need the in-game snaps. They need the on-field repetitions. This is not an encouraging situation with respect to the regular season, but it is a dynamic that should suit the Jets well in terms of winning preseason contests.
Why Cincinnati Will Win
Playing in the NFL is high-stakes poker for the coaches and players involved. The Cincinnati Bengals know that they have the talent to become a title contender, but in order for that to happen, they need to address some urgent needs. Quarterback Andy Dalton is a promising young quarterback who performed well above expectations last season. He was helped by a talented and athletic group of receivers, but he did not have the running game needed to breathe freely in the pocket. Cincinnati needs to have more of a ground game this season, and the Bengals' draft moves reflected as much. The team used a first-round pick (at No. 27) on guard Kevin Zeitler, the reason being that the Bengals' offensive line could not get much of a push against defensive fronts. Cincinnati needs better line play in order to become a true Super Bowl contender. This game will give the Bengals' linemen a chance to show their teammates that they're better than ever.
Who Will Win
It’s reasonable to think that Cincinnati will be motivated for this game, but it's hard to think that Cincinnati will be more motivated than the Jets. New York will play better players for longer stretches of time; the Bengals will go more with third-string performers. Those patterns often decide preseason games. Go with the Jets.
