Why Oakland Will Win
The football betting community can see something very clearly. It knows that a week ago, the Arizona Cardinals, having already played a preseason game on August 5, got to play a second preseason contest against the Kansas City Chiefs, a team that had not played an extra game on Aug. 5. Because Arizona had the extra game under its belt, it seemed logical to think that the Cardinals would be sharper and more precise than the supposedly rusty Chiefs on Aug. 10. Instead, Kansas City busted out to a 17-0 lead, stunning the Cardinals and knocking a certain line of thought on its head. Arizona's extra in-game snaps meant nothing. Therefore, should the Cardinals, heading into their third preseason game, have an advantage over the Raiders, who are about to play their second preseason game this August? The answer should be "no." Arizona is simply struggling at the moment, so even though the Cards have accumulated more game experience over the past few weeks, there's no real reason to view that as a likely difference maker in the West Phoenix suburb of Glendale, where this game will be played.
If there's another really good reason to pick Oakland, consider that Arizona's projected week one starting quarterback, Kevin Kolb, received very little playing time against Kansas City. Kolb has been lightly dinged up in practice at the Cardinals' training camp, so he threw only five passes last week against the Chiefs, completing only one of those passes. Arizona needs Kolb to be an effective quarterback and a formidable presence as a passer in order to have a decent chance to win. The odds of Kolb being particularly healthy for this game are murky; the odds of Kolb playing a really solid game are especially low. Oakland should be able to shut down Arizona's offense and walk out of the Desert Southwest with a victory.
Why Arizona Will Win
When you talk about the hands of cards that various NFL teams are forced to play with, you quickly realize how much this league can be likened to a set of poker games. The cards that the Arizona Cardinals are holding in this game are better than the ones being held by the Oakland Raiders, who – at press time – have not yet played a preseason game. Oakland is scheduled to play the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football (Aug. 13). With this game being played on a Friday, you can do the simple math: Oakland will have just three days of rest (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) before playing this game. The Raiders will be tired; they'll have two fewer days of rest than the Cardinals. This kind of thing matters when betting on any sporting event, but especially on an NFL game.
Who Will Win
The lack of rest for the Raiders is too overwhelming to ignore as a primary factor in this game. Oakland will be dead tired, and Arizona will take advantage. Pick the Cardinals.
