Redskins Bears Betting Predictions – RGIII Looks To Deliver Encore In Chicago

Posted by Tony Bryant on 8/15/2012 6:28:49 PM

The Washington Redskins mortgaged their future to move up and select Heisman trophy winning quarterback Robert Griffin III second overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. It didn’t take very long for the new franchise QB to give Redskins’ fans something to cheer for. RGIII completed 4 of 6 passes for 70 yards and Washington’s only touchdown in a 7-6 win over the Buffalo Bears in his NFL preseason debut. The sports betting experts were impressed with what they saw from the rookie starter, and will get a chance to see an encore Saturday as the Redskins travel to face the Chicago Bears.

NFL Betting Line: Chicago Bears -1

The Bears didn’t give their fans much to cheer for in their exhibition opener with Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Julius Peppers and other starters held out of a 31-3 loss to the Denver Broncos. With news that linebacker Brian Urlacher underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean up tissue in his knee and is at risk to miss regular season games, football fans in the Windy city could certainly use something to cheer for.

NFL Betting Preview: Washington Redskins

While it is still only preseason, Washington has to be happy with what it saw from Griffin III, especially considering how backups Rex Grossman and Kirk Cousins struggled for a combined 96 yards and an interception between them. RGIII showed a strong rapport with his wide receivers, connecting with Pierre Garcon on the touchdown for one of his three catches while Josh Morgan had a team-high four catches for 49 yards. Running back Alfred Morris looked good and could be in the mix behind Roy Helu and Evan Royster in what looks like a crowded backfield. The Redskins’ defense held the Bills to a pair of field goals in the win, and while the cornerback position appears stacked with DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson, Cedric Griffin, and Kevin Barnes, rookie seventh-round pick Richard Crawford made an impact with an interception and a tackle for a loss.

NFL Betting Preview: Chicago Bears

While they didn’t get the result they wanted, the Bears’ starting defense did hold Peyton Manning to just 44 yards without both Urlacher and Peppers, with safety Major Wright coming through with a key interception on the four-time NFL MVP in his own endzone. Peppers should see some snaps on defense while Cutler, Marshall, and Forte all get their first looks of the year on the offensive side of the ball. Marshall was brought in to be the big-play receiver Chicago lacked, but they could have a diamond in the rough in second-round pick Alshon Jeffery, who had four catches for 35 yards in his pro debut. At 6’3’’, Jeffery has the size to be a dominant receiver opposite Marshall, and the coaches have been very impressed with what they have seen so far. The biggest question mark for the Bears remains an offensive line that gave up six sacks against Denver, and blocked for a rushing attack that averaged just 1.7 yards per carry.

NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The Redskins were pleased with what they saw from RGIII in his debut, but it will get much tougher from here on forward with fiercer competition as the preseason progresses. After getting absolutely blown away in front of a packed house in the exhibition opener, look for head coach Lovie Smith to finally give Bears’ fans a reason to cheer as he gets some of his key players their first snaps of the season in a sportsbook contest that Chicago should win.
