Redskins Rams Betting Predictions – Redskins Aim For Unlikely Road Sweep In Week Two

Posted by Tony Bryant on 9/12/2012 6:46:30 PM

The Washington Redskins have been a moribund franchise for the past several seasons. They have a chance to change opinions around the NFL this weekend in St. Louis against the Rams.

Washington Redskins @ St. Louis Rams – Sunday, September 16
Sport betting line: Washington -3

Why Washington Will Win

If you want to make a winning bet on professional football, picking against the St. Louis Rams has – in recent years – been a very good play. The Rams might be good in the future now that they have a quality coach, former Tennessee Titan boss Jeff Fisher. The Rams have simply not had good coaches since Mike Martz – the architect of the team's turbo-charged offense and an appearance in Super Bowl XXXVI in the 2001 season – left town. Fisher is poised to lead this team back to a place of respectability, but as this long-term project gets off the ground, the short-term reality is that the Rams are not yet ready to contend.

St. Louis' defense did play well in week one, snagging three interceptions against Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford. However, it's important to point out that Stafford is a pure pocket passer. The quarterback the Rams will see this week is Robert Griffin III, a capable pocket passer but also a man who can scramble and – to draw yet another key distinction – sprint upfield for big gains when plays break down in the pocket. Griffin is a different sort of signal caller, one who will pose a lot of problems for the Rams' defense. St. Louis needed those three turnovers from Detroit to keep last week's game close against the Lions. If the Rams can't get three more turnovers this week against the Redskins, they're not going to be able to score enough to prevail.

Why St. Louis Will Win

When NFL betting students analyze this game, they have a very tough choice in front of them. Should they trust that Jeff Fisher will get the Rams on track in week two, or should they go with the hot quarterback, Robert Griffin III, who torched the New Orleans Saints' defense in the most spectacular rookie debut of week one in this NFL season?

There's ample reason to go with St. Louis. First of all, the Rams played Detroit – a playoff team last season – far better and closer than a lot of pigskin pundits were ready to expect. The Rams met the Lions on even terms on the road and had a chance to win in the final minutes of regulation. That debut was painful, but it bodes well for the rest of the season. If the Rams can play with the defensive instincts they showed against the Lions, they will certainly be in the hunt versus the Redskins.

The second thing to realize about this game is that the Redskins took advantage of a New Orleans team that was swimming in uncertainty in week one. The Saints were happy about the lifting of player punishments by an appellate panel in the BountyGate case, but they were still without linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who was injured, and they sorely missed the presence of head coach Sean Payton, suspended for the full year. The Rams don't have a suspended coach. They can game plan for Griffin and find a way to stop him.

Who Will Win

It’s a tough call, but it's ultimately difficult to think that Robert Griffin III will have two straight great games. Rookie quarterbacks typically do not string together back-to-back A-plus performances. If the Rams can confuse Griffin, they'll win. That's what will happen on Sunday.
