The Saints Super Bowl betting odds includes the New Orleans Saints for the first time ever. On the strength of a sloppy game from the Minnesota Vikings, the Saints are marching into the big dance for the first time in franchise history. As their radio announcer said after Garrett Hartley kicked the game-winning field goal: “Pigs have flown, hell has frozen over and the Saints are going to the Super Bowl”.

Now that the Super Bowl line is up, here is an overview of the Saints strength and weaknesses.

Saints have played in two NFC Championship Games in last four years

How They Got Here: Saints Super Bowl betting odds
Until the last three weeks of the season, online betting cappers had the Saints neck-in-neck with the Indianapolis Colts as far as the best teams in the NFL. The Saints started the year 13-0 and then had a few hiccups against the Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers down the stretch.

Nonetheless, the Saints have had the most prolific offense in the NFL throughout most of the year and they are very multifaceted. They carved up both the league’s best and worst teams and they will be a handful in the Super Bowl.

Strengths: Saints Super Bowl betting odds
The sportsbook odds makers have set a very high total in this contest because both teams can score.

The Saints offense is led by Drew Brees, who orchestrates a unit that averages 403.8 yards per game and 31.9 points per game. The difference this year has been the addition of running back Pierre Thomas and the running game, which churned out over 2100 yards. Last year, the Saints were one-dimensional with their lethal passing attack but this year, they have supplemented it with an excellent ground game and have really kept opposing defenses on their toes.

While the offense is explosive, so is the defense. Coordinator Gregg Williams has taken a mediocre unit and made them special. The Saints blitz more than any other team in the NFL and they seem to get to the quarterback very often. They throttled Brett Favre in the NFC Championship Game and if they do the same to Peyton Manning, they could wind up as Super Bowl champions.

Weaknesses: Saints Super Bowl betting odds
The Saints weaknesses are tough to pinpoint but when the team struggles, it seems to be a team-wide affair. Even with five turnovers in the NFC Championship Game, they barely squeaked by the Minnesota Vikings. In that contest, they were whipped in the time of possession battle and that can’t happen again.

The Saints struggle in short yardage situations and they are still looking for a solution. And even though Garett Hartley kicked them into the Super Bowl, he’s still a question mark.

Experience: Saints Super Bowl betting odds
NFL betting fans might think that the Colts have a huge edge in experience but don’t forget that the last time the Colts were in the Super Bowl, the Saints were in the NFC Championship Game.

While the Colts have made two Super Bowls in the last four years, the Saints have played in two NFC Championship Games in that span and this time, advanced past. Sure, they haven’t won the big one yet but they have been deep into the playoffs and this won’t be completely unfamiliar territory to them.
