Seahawks, Cardinals Must Deal With Thursday Night Attrition
After playing on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals must find a way to heal and then play with enough quality to win an NFC West Division game. It won’t be easy.
Seattle Seahawks @ Arizona Cardinals – Thursday, October 17
Sports betting line: Seahawks -7
Why Seattle Will Win
This is a situation in which the Seahawks are going to benefit primarily from their opponent’s quarterback. Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer continues to show that he’s just not going to get better in the latter stages of his career. Palmer once was a fine quarterback, but he’s much more of a liability than a plus for the Cardinals at this point. Taking a sack in the end zone, throwing passes into traffic, you name it – Palmer littered the field with miscues against San Francisco. It’s true that he did make a number of strong throws down the field, and that Larry Fitzgerald’s fumble in the 49ers’ red zone in the third quarter was the key play of the game. Yet, Palmer was simply way too erratic to give Arizona the steady offense it needs to beat a team as good as Seattle. Arizona’s wins this season have been the product of the team’s defense, which is well above average. Yet, as long as the offense fails to pull its weight, it’s going to be hard for that defense to continue to win games.
One should also point out that Seattle played a below-average game this past Sunday against the Tennessee Titans… and still won. The Seahawks committed the kinds of mistakes that generally lead to defeat, but they prevailed. On a short week, expect the Seahawks to demonstrate better ball security and do the kinds of things that won’t allow Arizona to get easy points against their defense.
Why Arizona Will Win
When the online betting experts tackle this clash, they will point out that the Cardinals did not play poorly on defense last week against the San Francisco 49ers. Arizona competed evenly with the Niners through three and a half quarters, hitting hard on defense and continuing to make life difficult for San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick. If Arizona could contain Kaepernick, it can surely do the same thing to Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, who mustered only 20 points this past Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
Seattle is a vulnerable team on the road. The Seahawks are 2-1 on the road this season, but one win was a 12-7 eyesore against Carolina and the other one was an overtime victory over Houston after trailing 20-3 midway through the second half. Arizona’s defense should win a lot of battles against Seattle’s offense. If the Cardinals can get a few turnovers and turn them into points, they’ll have a great chance.
Who Will Win
The Cardinals are going to try hard, but the Seahawks should have enough defense to prevail. Arizona will contain Seattle’s offense, but Carson Palmer will probably make one or two big mistakes, enabling the Seahawks to escape the desert with a win. Arizona should cover, however.
