Texans Kick Off 2013 NFL Season As Road Favorites At Houston
The Houston Texans have come up short of their Super Bowl aspirations in each of the last two NFL seasons. The hope for head coach Gary Kubiak and the fans is that the third time will be the charm. The Texans open a new year with what on paper could be the most talented roster in franchise history, and are looking to finally get to the big game. The long road begins with an online sports betting clash with the San Diego Chargers in the second of a Monday Night Football doubleheader, where the Texans will kick off as 3.5-point road favorites.
Houston Texans @ San Diego Chargers
Monday September 9, 2013 – 10: PM ET
Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, California
NFL Sports Betting Line: Houston – 3.5
The Chargers are starting over again under first-year head coach Mike McCoy, but he has a ton of talent to work with on both sides of the ball if his staff and players can put it all together. San Diego has been one of the biggest underachievers in the NFL over the past couple of years, and McCoy needs to establish a winning culture.
NFL Betting Preview: Houston Texans
This Houston team is loaded on both sides of the ball with a top-10 offense and a top-10 defense, with rookie wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and veteran safety Ed Reed expected to be the missing pieces needed on each side of the ball. Hopkins will work as the No. 2 receiver behind Andre Johnson on a run-first offense that features Arian Foster and Ben Tate, but can also move the ball through the air with Johnson, Hopkins, and tight end Owen Daniels. Meanwhile, Reed joins a top-five defense led by JJ Watt and Brian Cushing, with the chance for this unit to be even better this season.
NFL Betting Preview: San Diego Chargers
The Chargers’ defense appears to be an underrated strength led by a strong linebacker core that features Dwight Freeney and Jarrett Johnson on the edges as well as Donald Butler and rookie Mant’I Teo on the inside. The challenge will be maximizing the potential of an offense that has the talent to put up big numbers but has been plagued by inconsistency and turnovers over the past few online sportsbook seasons. Running back Ryan Matthews is healthy for now, but quarterback Phillip Rivers really needs to bounce back and play like the franchise quarterback the majority of experts thought he would develop in to.
NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick
The Texans would be at least a seven-point favorite if this game was being played in Houston, and there really isn’t any reason to think they can’t be just as good as the visiting team in this one. The Chargers will struggle to contain the Texans’ offense, and it doesn’t help that their own offense has to go up against one of the toughest defenses in the NFL week one.
NFL Betting Pick: Houston Texans – 3.5
