Tips For Betting On Chargers 49ers – Chargers, 49ers Meet In Clash Of California Contenders

Posted by Tony Bryant on 8/27/2012 6:52:02 PM

The San Francisco 49ers returned to the playoffs as NFC West champions a year ago. If the San Diego Chargers play to their potential this season, they will join the 49ers as teams that bring the postseason party to the Bay area. The Chargers will play San Francisco in the final preseason game for both teams this Thursday, without much left to determine for either team in exhibition play. San Diego rested two key offensive starters in quarterback Phillip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates a week ago due to injury, so there is a chance both could see snaps in this game as a final tuneup before week one.

After a tough game in Denver last week in which they allowed 17-first quarter points, 49ers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh could turn to his first-team defense looking to shore things up before the games that count. San Francisco had the best defense in the NFC a year ago, and will rely on those units in its pursuit of a second-consecutive NFC West title.

Even without Rivers and Gates the Chargers cruised to a 12-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings last week, with the defense coming up big once again. San Diego has held the Packers, Cowboys, and Vikings to an average of 14 points per game through three-straight exhibition wins, and many sports betting experts feel this group is talented enough to finish in the top-10 this season. Running backs Jackie Battle and Ronnie Brown are battling for touches in a deep Chargers’ backfield, and with Ryan Matthews coming off a broken collarbone both could play a big role looking forward to week one of the regular season. Backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst was sacked five times against Minnesota, and will need to do a better job getting rid of the ball faster.

The 49ers’ defense did have a pair of sacks and an interception against the Broncos, but after last season the expectation level has been raised. As for the offense, it doesn’t look like quarterback Alex Smith will get much time so look for backup Colin Kaepernick to get a heavier workload. Kaepernick completed all four of his passes for 80 yards versus Denver, and will undoubtedly be the No. 2 behind Smith this season. With running back Brandon Jacobs injured there is an opening for the third-string job behind Frank Gore and LaMichael James, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if a big game earned one of the backs still on the roster a spot.

NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

While the 49ers may have a roster better prepared for the regular season, San Diego has more on the line in this game as it looks to find a viable replacement for Matthews early on with the chance to complete an undefeated preseason. That may not seem like a big deal for a San Francisco team coming off an NFC Championship game appearance, but after years of underachieving Chargers’ head coach Norv Turner considers every online sportsbook victory significant right now.
