Tips For Betting On Panthers Redskins – RGIII, Newton Go Head To Head This Sunday
When Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton burst in to the NFL with a record-setting Rookie of the Year award-winning campaign, the rest of the league took notice. In many ways, Newton’s success with the Panthers led to many teams coveting a similar skill set when Robert Griffin III entered the 2012 NFL Draft. In the end, the Washington Redskins were the team willing to spend the most to land RGIII, and mortgaged a substantial portion of their future to move up and draft him. While Griffin III has lived up to expectations in his rookie seasons, Newton has struggled through his second year, setting up an intriguing sports betting matchup heading in this Sunday’s game between the Panthers and Redskins.

NFL Betting Line: Washington Redskins – 3
RGIII isn’t on pace to break the records set by Newton a year ago, but his 66.3-percent completion rate and eight passing touchdowns are pretty impressive. Meanwhile Newton hasn’t been able to match last year’s productivity in his second season, and that has led to a dismal record through the first half.
NFL Betting Preview: Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are just 1-6 heading in to week nine of the regular season, tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the worst record in the NFL. The biggest concerns have had to do with Newton’s performance both on and off the field, as the team and his own personal struggles on the field have taken their toll both mentally and emotionally. The second-year passer has thrown for 1,701 yards and five touchdowns, but he has also thrown eight interceptions and has eight fumbles on the year. Carolina hasn’t done much to help Newton on either side of the ball, and it will once again be on the reigning ROY to get the job done.
NFL Betting Preview: Washington Redskins
While he has contributed to the offense on the ground as well as through the air, RGIII has gotten a ton of help from a rushing attack that ranks second in the NFL, with running back Alfred Morris averaging 4.7 yards per carry. The commitment to the run game has helped open things up through the air, and Washington head coach Mike Shanahan has dialed up a ton of option and read plays. The Redskins’ defense has struggled this season, including 27 points allowed against both the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers in consecutive losses. These two quarterbacks have very similar skill sets, so it will be interesting to see how each defense attacks the other.
NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick
For as bad as the Panthers’ record looks, it doesn’t tell the whole story of how this team has performed this season. Carolina has dropped five of its six losses by six points or less, including a late loss last week against the Chicago Bears that came as the result of a last-second field goal. The Redskins have been beaten up pretty bad in their last two losses, and with such a close matchup between these teams it makes sense to take the online sportsbook points that are being offered.
