Why Bet On Minnesota Vikings (0-3 SU, 1-1-1 ATS)
For the third straight week, the Vikings led their opponents by 10 points or more at halftime and this time, they were up 20 points on Detroit at home. However, for the third straight week Minnesota crumbled in the second half and ended up falling 26-23 in overtime to the Lions at home. Donovan McNabb was 22-of-36 for 211 yards and a touchdown, while Adrian Peterson had 78 yards and a score on 17 carries for the Vikings, although he was also involved in a peculiar play late in the game (Peterson waved the field-goal unit off on fourth down, and the ball ended up going to Toby Gerhart). Defensively, the Vikings were doing fine in the first half and sacked Detroit’s Matt Stafford five times, and they also held the Lions to 20 yards on 19 carries.
However, the Vikings have yet to realize that a game is two halves, not one, and they’ve been brutal in the second half this season. There are a lot of factors at play here; Leslie Frazier is a first-year head coach and calls some strange plays at times. The Vikings tend to go away from Peterson, who is by far their biggest offensive weapon and it allows them to run down the clock. The defense gives up big plays too often. There is plenty of blame to go around, but now is not the time for blame; the Vikings have to fix it, and quickly.
Why Bet On Kansas City Chiefs (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS)
The Chiefs showed NFL betting players that they at least had some heart in a 20-17 loss in San Diego as they were 14.5-point underdogs on the road after getting blown out in their first two games of the season. Matt Cassel was 17-of-24 for 176 yards, two touchdowns and a pick, while Dwayne Bowe had four catches for 67 yards and a score for the Chiefs, who also managed 81 yards on the ground despite having Jamaal Charles on the sidelines with a knee injury. The Kansas City defense picked off Philip Rivers twice and kept the Chiefs in the game, and it was a very encouraging performance after they were routed 89-10 in the first two games of the season.
But Kansas City still has a long way to go as they look to replace Charles, safety Eric Berry and tight end Tony Moeaki, who are all out for the season. The running game has to get better because it’s obvious that Cassel can’t carry the team on his own, along with Bowe. The Chiefs have to get a pass rush going to force mistakes, and while they intercepted Rivers twice, the rush has to be more consistent. Overall, the Chiefs can be proud of their effort as they probably should have been blown out of this game as well, and they were absolutely terrible in the first half, but Kansas City has to get back to basics and execute their gameplan better, especially on offense.
How It Will Play Out
NFL betting lines have the Vikings as a 1.5-point favorite on the road in Kansas City, and they’re 2-3 SU against the Chiefs since 1993, posting a 2-2-1 ATS mark as well. Three of those games went over the posted total, but this probably won’t be a shootout as neither offense is very good.
The Chiefs are the smart play here as they seem to be coming around after losing three of their best players in the first two weeks of the season, and they’re generally a good team at home. The Vikings look flustered and we’re not even sure McNabb will be the starter this week as rookie Christian Ponder is waiting in the wings. The Chiefs aren’t as bad as they’ve shown in the first three weeks, while the Vikings are exactly what they seem, and it’s going to be a long season in Minnesota.
